Rash gaurds and wet suits

sorry, im new to surfin, about to get my first lesson next week, ummmm. do i need both or one or the other. whats the deal? im lost

Kieran is right.

Rash vests originally evolved because wetsuit seams would rub under the arms and around the neck and cause a nasty rash, like carpet burn.

If I were you and I wasn't going to go out and buy a wetsuit ahead of my first surfing trip, I would consider buying a cheap rash vest (remember that when you are wearing it it should look like it's inside out - ie, the seams are on the outside.)

The reason for this is two fold. If you are going to rent a wetsuit it is unlikely to fit you properly and may rub. Also it means that you can wear something between your skin and a suit that hundreds of other people have work and possibly peed in!!
