advice for an 'oldie' living in the Mdlands (UK)

Would really like to take up surfing properly but have concerns where
a)Live in the Midlands miles from any sea!
b) too old at 38??
c) have young family so free time at a premium (although have a split screen camper van so that should help!)

I have made a start over past few years- have had two short courses (in Devon and Portugal) and have also made a few trips to North Devon but now want to really get in to it

Just bought by my own first board 7ft 6" Roger Cooper boad and wet suit so ready to go!!!

Any tips on the best way I can really get in to it

1) 38 years old is not too late. I learned to surf at age 47. Also, have read a good book entitled, "Kook," by a guy that learned to surf at age 45.
2) When I learned, I lived in a location that provided drives of 1 to 2 hours in length to surfing breaks in northern California. I went surfing every Saturday for 1.5 years. Due to the distance, it meant it was an all day experience including 4 to 6 hours in water, 2 to 4 hours round trip drive, and 1 to 1.5 hours cleanup once home. It can be done.
3) Small children: they love the beach. Take 'em. Bring lots of clothing changes, warm clothes, and food for them.

I was about 47 when I started too and wished I had stated when I was "only" about 38! So no worries there and you have a good head start on some of us.

How long is your drive to the nearest consistant surf spot?

I live 2 - 3 hrs away and there really is only one solution: make up your mind to travel every weekend when conditions are right. A few times a year is not going to cut it and you will only be frustrated at your lack of progress. Is there a surf club in your area? If you can hook up with some like minded people you all benefit from the collective urge to surf and can arrange car sharing and weekends away etc. But like Billie Morini be prepared to drive a few hours, surf and then drive home a few hours. What about the other half? She any interest?
