Pop Up Dilema

Postby Rogue_Shadow » Sun May 23, 2010 11:40 am

Hi SW

I started surfing summer of last year and really loved it, however as the winter came It got abit too cold for me and I couldn't really afford a winter suit. That and the fact that the waves got too big for me and resulted in my ripping a fin off my board.
So I waited for the winter surf to pass through.
Summer is approaching and I've been out a few times, but of course, I've forgotten everything. I also realise that the way I used to Pop up was wrong, using one knee on the board and hands on the rails.
So With my confidence knocked, Im finding it hard to pop up using the correct method. Even on small swells and white water.
I start paddling, feel the lift of the wave, arch my back .... that's it.
I cant bring myself to pop up. I always get to this stage and either body board the wave in, or revert back to using one knee.
Which takes forever for me to get up and tilts the board all over the place.
Help!
Any help or advise of how you learnt would be awesome!

Thank you!

practice in your home, every day till it's completely natural to swing your legs through, plus there are no rails to grab on the carpet so stops you developing/keeping that bad habit.

Look to the left or right (whichever way the wave is breaking) and it slows things down big time and gets you to not focus on the drop.

I agree with tree4 above. Practice, practice, practice on dry land until it's burned into your muscle memory. Once you have it down you'll probably never have to think about it again. Enjoy!
