I used to kayak in the Swiss alps grade 0 to technical 6 with a documented grade 7 put in, via abseil ! ( a 7 is like a decent Waimea !!!) and I found when surfing, the kayak helmets came too much around the face cheeks to be a helmet for good to advanced plus surfers.
As my link, and as Roy says; the Garth is proven and should be the only choice for protecting your noggin !

(I now just need to find a ball sack protector !!!!!)

Hwyl i chi !

I think you should be fine but just keep you injury in mind obviously. It kinda depends on whether you charge or you keep it conservative. Personally the only place i would rock a helmet would be at Pipe or like Teahupoo or somewhere real heavy. :D
