Popping Up

Postby b123 » Mon Sep 29, 2008 11:22 pm

Quick question...

When is the ideal time to pop up? I know that it's probably better to wait (if it's between too early or late), as you can wait a bit, but it seems like it's harder to pop up if you wait until the wave is thoroughly pushing you. Is it bad to pop up as soon as you feel like the wave has a grip on you? When's the best time in general?

Thanks

Thanks

Was thinking that might be it, as it seems that it gets much harder the longer you wait while riding down the wave.

at the end of a long session I get a bit that way - too much effort paddling to catch the wave, then not enough strength left to pop up fast - That's when I know it's time to get out

it all comes down to the feelings, you gotta feel for the wave, once you feel you started to pick up speed then it's time to take off...

The best bet is to pup up as soon as possible. Whatever will happen it will be better if you're on your feet.
That way you can avouid sharks

Your problems is not your pop up, it's your paddling.

Begginers always have problems popping up, either too learly and they miss the wave or too late and they end up bellysurfing. But it's not really the timming, its the paddling. The popup should be early, like when you missed the wave, but you missed it because you did not have enough momentum going, that was the right time to go, you just aren't good enough to catch it yet, you will be.

So concentrate on paddling hard and finding the sweet spot on your board for it to glide, too far foward you will pearl, too far back you will stall. Try harder paddling, it might help better than getting frustrated with your timming.

Re: Popping Up

I had a really funny incident when I tried to stand up - I pushed up and my board wobbled from side to side, so I went down again, then I started flapping around like a fish when my board got unstable and I managed to pop up and immediately fall off sideways.

Just get yourself up as quickly as you can without tumbling off.
