Fit for surfing?

Postby greypump » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:59 pm

Wondered how many folk out there get fit for surfing instead of getting fit from surfing? Any routines you orecommend? Seems swimming and stretching are big ones to follow.

I was in really bad shape when I started surfing, to the point that I could not paddle out even on calmer days. I bicycled, and just kept trying to get outback until I could. The cycling really helped, though. The surfing is my main activity now, as I can stay out for hours without getting bored.

I go to the gym 3 mornings a week doing weights, then i swim the other mornings. I find that it helps with my surfing.

I do two to three rounds of calisthenics and weight lifting and one round of rowing 5 days per week. This is done soley to make me strong and fit enough for surfing. I hate to exercise. When I began to surf, I figured out what needed improvement. It was just about everything. It is a pleasure to be fit for surfing because you can paddle better and still have energy to catch waves (and that's the fun part). Prior to surfing, I would not exercise regularly because I dislike it so much. Now, because surfing is so much fun, I will exercise so that I can have as much fun as possible.

I hate a structured workout....so I surf, and skate the local park asmy workouts. I am not as fit as I would like......but plenty fit to surf a 4 hour session.

If we had 4-6' waves every day I think I would be fit.

got that book and to be honest didnt really think much of it. you cant beat time in the pool. i do a milex3 every week and push ups and squat thrusts on the days in between. everyone struggles with paddling fitness to begin with-just because they've never used that muscle group before

spent the last six months swimming 3 nights a week and now whizz past my mates headin out back.... also have plenty left in the tank at the end of a 3 hour session on the waves.
don't follow much of what the book says either but aside from swimming there's not really a lot i can think of that's really benificial that i don't know already... that book sort of just reassures me that what i'm doing otherwise is right.

the sun salutation has helped my flexibility no end tho, particularly the hamstrings which were a bit of a problem before.
