Surfing Waves

I was sat in a doctors waiting room this morning which was full of old people. This guy who looked like he was about to drop dead any second and had almost started decomposing, felt the need to tell me his life story and how his wife of 43 years had just left him for another man... this guy must have been 90 something

Anyhow, it got me thinking about how awful it must be to get old, lose your hair, go all wrinkly, wet youself, shrink and be dependent on other people. I can't imagine being that age. It just seems too horrible to contemplate.

Basically, I don't want to grow old, or even think about it. *shudders*

I think age is largley a mind set. I know some pretty amazing people. One girl is 65 and she just won the Half Ironman World championships. Another guy I knew(he died last year), he was 98 and still was working on his sons farm.

i dont see it being too likely ill live to be old anyways.

There's a few guys I see surfing, who struggle to get a longboard under their arm and into the water, but they still charge in good waves. One old fella in particular here hassles everyone off waves, and consistently bags the wave of the day, and surfs with real style.

I wouldn't mind being old, wrinkled, shrunken, incontinent and still surfing, it would beat being in a hole in the ground.

Without wishing to sound too serious, in my (real) job I am around 'old people' more than most. Sure, some are a pain in the rear end, but most are great.

Respectful, modest, polite and able to put up with most things without moaning. And given an ear that is willing to listen, they'll make you feel humble beyond belief.....

Unfortunately, some people just dismiss the elderly as being something of an inconvenience......

Bravo, well said, being half way to the grave myself at 52 (although I look 45...???) when I can't surf anymore, permanently park me somewhere, nothing else to stick around for. My kid is on her own pretty much, and the thought of hobbling on a cane or carrying an oxygen bottle is not at all appealing. If I can surf at 90, I want to carry on, if not, plant me somewhere before I get decrepit...

When i start smelling of cat pee and Polygrip, my wife said that she would end it for me !

My girlfriend keeps me young.

She is 12 years younger than me. Wont let me wear anything but the latest in thing, makes me listen to young music, (and I'm a Musician), and stuff like that.

She's wicked.

.. the old boy doesnt actually realise he's playing rugby .. apparentely he mistook the ball for being his colostomy bag back in 1972 ..and no has had the heart to set him straight


on the old peeps thang .. i lovez em' .. much to learn from the older generation .. you know those things that just dont seem to be required anymore .. " respect, loyalty, courage in adversity, sense of community, wisdom etc etc

I recommend everyone spend at least an hour a week with an elderly neighbour or relative .. " age and wisdom produces a whole new level of heartfelt humour to your week
