Me too. I can stand for a while but struggle to go in a straight line
Always end up going across the wave (in the direction of my back) which must make me look awesome from the beach until i fall in but its really getting on my nerves now!

honestly? no idea its a bit hard to percieve time properly when surfing what with all the adrenaline n such. you might think youve been up ages but actually its about half a second.

I'm going to have people either calling me a liar, or just getting the hump - but honestly - I rode the very first wave I ever went for into the beach .... it was at Saunton, so I'd guess it was 15 seconds or more......

I borrowed an NSP (7'10" thing) off a mate, got a few tips on what to do as we were wading out into the white water and then I turned round and jumped onto the board, didn't really paddle that much, just sort of stood up (albeit knee first then struggle to feet job) and just stood there and let the wave do the rest.

Totally hooked from the outset, I bought that board off my mate and rode it for a couple of months before spalshing out on an LSD custom longboard (9'3"), which I still ride along with my 6'10" Nine Plus Magic Carpet.

I guess I was just lucky ..................... :D

Took me a good 3 months of surfing every day to stand up  In all honesty probably never stood up for a whole 15 seconds, although like James sais, i've had the odd ride that seemed to last forever.

Although i've *technically* been surfing for well over 2 years now most of that i've limited to getting in the water every couple of months, it wasnt till i was living in new Zealand and surfing every day in my summer holidays that i finally began to pop up. I was really hindered by the fact that i started (unintentionally) popping up to me knees/one knee. I seem to have mostly broken that habit now but i am regressing due to total lack of water time this year. Long term plan is to end up living somewhere that i can surf every day, one of the many reasons i'm training up as a marine ecologist.

Surfing-Innovation: I hate you, its not fair, let me have some of your natural pop up ability

LOL - not bad for an old git, eh?? Like I say - I think I was just lucky, but I am a bit of a perfectionist, so now I do things like popping up regular footed (I surf goofy naturally) and I've even been known to go from knee paddling to standing up without using my hands........ I also like paddling out back, or on flat days, and just popping up on waves that aren't there and seeing how long I can just balance for.........

Still can't nose ride though.............

Here's one for the everybody's different books. I stood up the very first day and rode one all the way to the beach. It's true. Everyone kept saying it looked like I actually knew what I was doing. But, I WAS taking lessons and the guy was pushing me into the waves. The next day I caught a similar wave all on my own and had a good ride. But, overall, I pretty much suck and still CANNOT pop-up very well at all. Still, it is fun!!! I'll feel better about my beginner abilities when I can finally do a proper pop-up and read the waves better. So much to learn!

What's not to believe??? Like I say, just lucky I guess, but true all the same........... :D

I don't profess to being able to do much (can't nose ride, can't cross step, can't do reo's, can't even cut back into the pocket that well) - I just bimble along the face for as long as I can - keeps me happy........... :D

Haha, waves around here usually don't last 10 seconds....much more 15 seconds!

Even if you are awesome and have a log and can pump it like mad, you still get 10 seconds max a lot of the time

Hired a board for four hours, was paddling into unbroken waves and catching them almost straight away. Kept getting in the way of the locals though as i didn't know the etiquite way back then. Got some verbals off the locals .

The mother of one of my surfing mates from Bude said something once that I never forgotten (she is a surfing legend from way back). She said to learn to surf takes a year of going everytime there is surf. I think she is spot on. It also helps to get a surf board that is going to help you, not hinder you.

I think it was my first time surfing; I rented one of those mega boyant Swell boards (that even a cow could stand up and surf).

I was in the water for 4 hours solid trying time and time again to stand up on; then finally i manage it and the ride went on for ages (just whitewater); I doubt it was truely 15 seconds long, but it sure did seem like it! :)

There was no looking back after that...

Having just timed 15 seconds... its probably quite a lot longer than most newbies are actually standing for. You'd travel a very long way in 15 seconds :?

I've just timed fifteen seconds too, it took fifteen seconds.
