some techie Qs about memory cards 'n' stuff...

In my Sony Ericsson phone I have 512mb Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo.
In my Sony PSP I have 1gb of what looks like the same. Are they interchangeable? Will they both take as big a memory stick as I can put in them?

I see you can get up to 8gb cards of the same type but still a bit pricy at £120, but the 4gb versions are only £25ish. Sandisk looks slightly cheaper but can I use it or does it have to be Sony?

I'm trying to be able to carry and listen to my entire mp3 collection wherever possible - house, on foot , in car. I think I'll need about 20gb storage.

20gb of decent mp3 player costs about £200 so I can save £75 with just getting memory sticks for the devices I already have. I need to connect to the car stereo somehow. I already have a fm transmitter for my 1gb rubbish cheap mp3 player but thats a bit fiddley to use whilst driving and hard to see the dislpay to search for tracks and stuff.
I was thinking the Sony psp would be easier to use cos the display is loads bigger, but I've never even used it for music at all so far. So can you get reasonably priced car stereos that have enough memory storage (15-20gb) with also a memory stick slot? Or would it be easier to get a car stereo that reads dvds containing mp3s. 1 dvd can hold 8.5gb data and cost £1.80 each, but they are to all intents and purposes read only, with no clever file accessing system and I don't have a dvd burner yet. :?

Wouldn't it be easier to get yourself a decent mp3 player, i picked up a 30gb Ipod video for £130 on Ebay...and an Itrip for about a tenner

Everything in one place & it plays through yr car/home stereo/radio...simple...no dvd's or memory cards to mess around with...

the memory stick brand and size shouldn't matter...(SanDisk is a good company IMO)

I'm not up on my car stereo info to advise on that one.

Well check out if Scandisk makes flash cards that work with sony stuff. Look up on their website. I know that the PSP plays music decently. I am not sure about what they have for playing through car stereos. I have an 80gig video Ipod and its great. I have about 25gigs of music. I listen to most of it. Depends on the mood i am in, thats why its nice to have a big one, you just put everything on it, no foolin around.

You don't listen to 20gb in one go. You just put it all in there and:

1) stick it on random play, listening to the stuff you forgot you had.
2) know you'll never be left without the perfect track for any moment.
:D

If you stuck with your PSP you could use one of those cassette adaptor thingies...from your headphone socket (I think)

Yeah that may well be the answer but I was thinking that searching through 20gb of mp3s to find that one track I need would be tricky whilst driving unless the menu can be seen on the car stereo display and using the car stereo controls. :?

I like the idea of using the PSP cos of the bigger screen than ipod and I recently discovered it can access internet via wireless networks that aren't secure! Cool for surf updates on the move, just got to find a network, Norwich city centre for instance has a free wireless network up all the time :D .

ok having researched further I think the best route is to get an ipod. I've found loads of places that sell ipod kits for car stereos so you can use the car stereo display and controls for the ipod. Also whilst there are better mp3 players out there, they aren't that much better and they don't have the same amount of accessories and connections 'n' stuff.
My mobile phone contract is ending soon and I've seen deals where you can get free ipods with the phone so I'll look into that.

Actually I've seen them give away PS3s  ! ...well to be fair its not really 'giving away' when its costing £75/month line rental!

Am I the only geek here who likes to reserch pretty much everything I buy?

Cheers for the help guys :) .
