The only thing I'd agree with in the artical is negative reporting, but we have that problem everywhere.

So oppressing a political view is part of the "political freedom" we're meant to be envious of!?!

Well Georgie Dubyas actions aside, he makes a good point. People in the 'western" countries are generaly oblivious to the luxorious lifestyle we lead. So due to this ignorance, the think they are hard done by.....but that is just a societal norm that I am sure has always existed.

His point is valid about us (the western world) moaning, but the pro-US nonsense is sickening.

Do you all think that by "western world" he means more than just the US? I know that he is specifically speaking of the US, but isn't there other countries that function just the same way? The US, Canada, UK, and pretty much all the other countries that people live in that access this site have very similar cultures, technologically speaking and such. (seeing we have the money, resources, time, etc to be on a website specifically about surfing, which its self is a luxury)

I originally got this in an email form, saying that it was written by Jay Leno. It was a bit changed around as well. So I guess the email was wrong and said that Jay Leno wrote it, although it appears this guy did.

I think the super conservative shirt ads were simply coincidental....the article can be found on all sorts of sites, but many liberals like to deny the existance of this, although a liberal read it on national TV.

I agree I thought that the line was backwards about liking the US but not the citizens. After the conversations on here I have had it tends to be exactly opposite.

Have you read Kiterunner by chance? Great novel, give it a read. Anyways, my point there, the narrator grew up in Afganistan in the 80s (I think) and he speaks constantly about how western culture is constantly embraced. Western movies, western clothing, etc. Later in the novel someone says to him "he was never really an Afgan, he wanted to be American the whole time". The novel was a biography, or semi-biographicacl atleast, can't rembmer.

Yeah, thats exactly the point. You seem to be an exception, but a lot of americans do think that the USA is 'special', which it isnt. Its just bigger.

I think his ramblings are a little shortsighted. If people didn't have things to moan about it would mean we are contented in our suroundings, if everyone was happy there would be no need for invention and innovation that keeps the world and our civilitation going.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (nicely please). The term "western" and "the west" originates from exploring days when Europe was considered the west and Asia, specifically China and India (large trading countries) were the east or far east. I'm sure America was added to this somewhere along the line. But now the meaning of "the west" encompasses most fully developed countries; most of Europe, U.S, Canada, NZ, Oz etc.

Yes, that was what I was trying to say, just clarifying that, making sure ya'll didn't think I was saying "western" as in the US only. I meant western culture, as in developed countries in Europe and North America.

New Zealand, Oz, as well, they're just kinda geographically out there

one thing that i dont like about this article is:
He says 63% of people dont like the way the nation is heading.
those people dont like the way the nation is HEADING, not the way it IS. There is a big difference. You could write exactly the same thing about a nation that is losing half its territory!
he says 69% of americans dont like the president. His support on this is weak.
