trying to quit smoking

Postby Ol' DZ » Tue Mar 20, 2007 3:43 am

I've been doing it for about 6 years now and I want out! I tried to go "cold turkey" the other day and it wasn't pretty. I caved about 5 hours after I woke up because the withdrawals were driving me absolutely crazy. I mean, I'm sure it's not up there with stuff like crack and such, but the physical symptoms of nicotine withdrawal are pretty rough.

Basically over the past 8 months or so I've completely changed my eating/exercise habits and gotten really into being healthy, and obviously smoking cigarettes completely contradicts that. Not to mention the fact that they cost a ridiculous amount of money that would be well spent elsewhere, or even better saved away. Since I found I couldn't just quit, I decided to cut way back (I ration them now and try to wait as long as I can in between cigarettes...I find I actually do have the willpower to do that much) and see if I couldn't sort of wean the level of my addiction down gradually over a long period of time until it will become a little more bearable to finally give it up.

Has anyone on here quit smoking? If so, how'd you do it?

Cold turkey. Its unpleasnt for about a week then its just habit breaking which you can combat by changing your routines around and doing other stuff.

Yep, go cold turkey for a week or so. I found that smoking a cigarette without lighting it ( as stupid as that sounds) helped me. But then again..i wasn't a heavy smoker.

I think i quit smoking fags by accident.

I last smoked a ciggy on thursday got painfully drunk and didnt want one for a day (I think its because i smoked about 20 in 3 hours)

Then i didnt smoke all weekend. I just realised last night that i had gone 4 days without smoking.

I sort of want one now though.

i wont break.

Nicotine patches / gum / lozenges REALLY help!

I smoked from 13 to 25 (most of that time over a pack a day). I tried everything, patches, gum, cold turkey, changing my life-style. All worked for a short time.

When I was 25 I stopped for a few months and when I started again it just wasn't as good, my morning smoke, (most pleasurable in my opinion) wasn't very nice, in fact none of my cigarettes tasted good. So after a couple of months on not really enjoying smoking, just doing it out of habit, I quit.

I haven't wanted a cigarette since and haven't had one, not even a J.

I know this doesn't really help you, but I thought I'd share. It's like someone telling an insomniac they never have problems sleeping, (I'm a part time insomniac).

*For all you americans I had to replace fag with smoke and cigarette*

Sounds like next time you quit you should maybe avoid the herbal remedy for quite a while just to be extra sure...maybe put the extra time and effort into making a home baked remedy instead so if nothing else at least you still won't be smoking

I've never really been real big on that stuff, just the cigs...cutting back seems to be working pretty good btw. I used to smoke almost a pack and a half a day, which I cut down to 10 cigs a day and am having no troubles yet (knock on wood). I don't know if it's wishful thinking or not but it seems like just today I noticed myself not getting quite as anxious after 2 and a half hours without a smoke as I was a few days ago... :D

Trying to think confidently and get myself into the frame of mind that this plan WILL work out.
