Question for the girls...

Postby .Jen. » Fri Mar 02, 2007 5:49 pm

Ive been growing my hair since

<------ Was taken about 4 years ago.

Had it cut on Tuesday. It was most of the way down my back (couple more inches and I could have had a new style g-string!) and was pissing me off something chronic (catching on everything, taking too long to wash and dry, knotty...).

Its now short and layered at the back, jaw length at the sides and ive got some sort of weird fringe that starts one side of my head and finishes the other side.

I liked it initially, but im not too sure now. Question is... do yer reckon it takes a while to get used to a new hairstyle after having the same one for a while, or did I fleshin' up and go for something that in a few weeks time is gonna have me reaching for the razor?

Hmmm its a tough one. I had all my hair chopped off whilst in NZ, it was half way down my back and its really thick, i got it all cut off because i thought that it would be easier to look after during the summer because i was going to be surfing every day and travelling and camping lots.

WRONG. I got it chopped in a shortish bob (still long enough to tie back) but it still took as long to dry and styling it was worse, unlike my long hair which looked quite cool when messy, short hair just looks well.....messy. I loved it for the first couple of weeks but soon regretted it. Its growing back now and i definatley want it long again.

Saying that, whats done is done, im sure it looks lovely and if its a big change then maybe your just taking time to adjust to it. Worst comes to worst, it'll grow back :)

I agree with what Libby says, sometimes it can take a long time to get used to.
I spent a couple of years growing the layers out of my hair and it got to the longest it had ever been and I liked it. About a month ago got them cut back in, it looked great in the salon but I dont style my hair unless for a very special occaison, with the layers it looks rubbish unstyled and I regret it so Im starting to grow it again  Long hair looks good without any effort as long as its in alright condition.

Sounds like you have a funky but high maintenance haircut, so depends wether you want to keep putting the work into styling it every day and you probably look a little different to what you're used to so give it more time. Personally I cant be bothered with styling, lifes too short. If you liked the long hair just grow it again. Takes ages though :x

well i like styles but i agree they hard work. if you reach for the razor.. you'll still have to grow it out... it'll just take longer so i would just put up with it until it grows back out. you got any pics so we can reasure you?

Perhaps post a picture and let us give a good look? The weird fringe things you speak of, are they bangs or something else? Bet you look cute regardless so don't sweat it too much! I bet you tipped them, didn't you?! I always do even when they make me look like a duffus.

Jen, I think it definitely takes time to get used to a new 'do! You've been looking at the same reflection in the mirror for years and then one day it's like "aaargh, what the flesh happened to me?!?!"

I'm defo not a 'style' girl! Had my hair cut short about 5 years ago, going for the spiky look, and it just didn't work, looked really rubbish! Spent the next 3 years growing it back, and now all I ever do is tie it back in a ponytail. I hate wearing it down cos I just can't stand when it gets in my face!

I did have it braided a couple of years ago (loose braids as opposed to corn rows, tho again I always wore them tied back!) and that did look awesome, would really like to have that done again! apart from that I just can't be arsed!

hmmmm.... I agree with libby too

I had long hair all my life until I went to uni and cut it all off (well, it was REALLY short). It was the biggest mistake of my life and I've been growing it back ever since. 10 years on and it's only just back to normal. I'm never cutting it short again. At least with long hair you can tie it back when you can't be bothered and I hate high maintenance hair do's.

I'd give it a few weeks to get used to it and see how you feel. If you don't like it you'll just have to wait for it to grow again and wear lots of hats (or get hair extensions). I'm sure there will be something different you can do with it if you really hate it.

Post a pic so we can all see!

Ok heres a pic, wasnt too impressed at the time lol.

Slowly getting used to it, and the huge amounts of hair gum keeping it in place stop it bugging me too much!!

Wow! They did a nice job. The bangs (y'all call 'em fringe) are nice and long so you don't look like a little kid and the length in the back is nice on your face! I'd say it's just going to take getting used to. Cute!
