Earthquake

Postby Beachbum » Mon Oct 16, 2006 6:33 am

I just had a earthquake happen where I live which sucks since there was no electricity until around 8:00 p.m tonight :x . It was a crappy rainy day and I couldn't go surfing so this was like the worst Sunday ever. Anyone else live in Hawaii and what did you do during this time.

Don't live in Hawaii, but know the drill when it comes to quakes. I have been lucky to live in an area where power outages are less of an issue in earthquakes. Of course there was one earthquake, a 7 point something, that happened near me that I never felt, only saw an antenna moving.
From what I heard, the power was intentially shut off on Oahu to avoid any catastrophe that may have occured after the quake.
Usually if the quake is at night, I just try to sleep through it, or wait for the shaking to stop then go back to sleep. Been lucky, have never experienced major damage at home, just a lot of shaking.

Ah, that sucks!

When we had it here, it was like 7-8 in the morning and it was really violent, but not much damage was caused. It was more of an annoyance.

Hey, if your out surfing all day, what do you really need electricity for :D
Luckily, or unluckily as the case may be, natural gas is not that common in the islands, so you don't have gas leaks and fires after quakes.
Glad to hear that you are in one piece though, it's now been declared a national disaster area by the president.

Good to know you're alright there, hawaii.

I was watching CNN about the quake, and they interviewed a guy who was in Oahu when it hit. The news anchors asked what the guy had been doing.
His reply?

"I was out in the water surfing early in the morning"

the action always seems to miss oahu. tsunami's, hurricanes...the earthquake only really HIT the big island. it just shook us around a bit.

I have been known to sleep through the odd 6 point earthquake, it seems like they happen in the morning a lot.
And doesn't everyone in Hawaii have those little torches in their yards, like they have at all the luaus and hotels
