Guys,

When I switch my comp on it all works, but then after a few mins there is a major freeze for about 2 mins. The mouse cursor still moves and you can double click on icons but nothing happens. Then all of a sudden everything that you clicked on comes up and the comp carries on as normal.. I know very little about the mechanics of a comp, so does anyone have any ideas?

I've done a spyware search and it found 1000+ worms. I have defragmented the C drive and it has about 64% free space????????

sounds like it's getting older and slower. if you've cleaned up the viruses and whatever other unwante gunk you may have on your computer, try looking by where your clock/toolbar/startmenu is. are there a lot of little icons there? if there are a lot of little icons, this could be slowing down the start up of your computer, sometimes you can right click on the icon and it may give you the option of not running the program at start up. I usually just start the comp, wait for my logon screen, log on then walk away and do something else for a while, and by the time I get back the comps all ready to go.

Sound to me like a comnbination of things...

1st things first you need to do a full sweep for spyand ad-ware (use "Ad-Aware SE" ) and remove everything.
2nd - do a disk clean - (start - programs - Accessories - System tools ) and tick everythign in the boxes and also click the advanced tab and click "Clkean up all old system restore points" Then click ok. It'll take an age but bare with it.
After that restart...

Now to check on whats doing the dirt... If the 'freeze' still happends restart again and as soon as the desktop appears press; control, alt, deleate in that order holding each one down. This will bring up the system manager. Now watch the CPU usage of each program as it goes through the freeze...

My bets are that its now your anti-virus software thats eating all your usage time... If so make sure its updated and then go to the settings of it. and report back to me with a screanshot!

Also take a screan shot of your running processes (from the crontrol alt deleate process) and I'll havea gander at what should and shouln't be there.

sounds like a slow down cathme up problem. I run a small sound studio so you can imagine the seriouse pressure this puts on my comp and i have 2 gigs of ram . I had that prob and changed the ram setting to write instantly. That would sort the problem probably but unfortunatly because my system is set-up for a specific purpose so it wont help your needs. So to be more specific i have a few things you should check out.

1 - how old is your computer. really old computers have anasty habbit of slowing down. i.e hardrive deteration.

2 - how much ram do you have and what are your virtual ram settings.

3 - what programs are set to start up when you comp loads by default i have only the essentuals load up at startup. (this could be a big contributing factor.

4 - what programs run in the background you can disable all non esentual programs that will free up a lot of power.

5 - adware/spyware/trojans yarda yarda. make sure you are using a good quality anti virus suite those free ones are junk. Oh and stop visiting those porn sites

6 - corupted software. installed anyhing new lately? when in doubt retract your steps.

Okay from the info you have given it sounds as if the route cause of your problem could possibly be too many start-up programs loading in the background.

yep, probably cluttered up with junk. The reason it stops responding is the computer is busy doing something, you can still move the mouse etc. as the input devices have a very high priority but the things you click on dont so they cant start until the computers finished doing what it was doing. The joys of M$ windows.
Best bet is wipe it all off and do a clean install of windows from scratch and youll have a nice snappy computer again like when it was new.

hope he kept all important files backed up. Its somehing you will learn to do if you ever have to format your disk, swearing and spitting blood because you will lose 3 weeks of unreteriavable hard work. Since then i back up my drive at least every week.

Oh and ya the prob deff sounds like junk and probably corrupted junk slowing the comp down.

To have a 1000+ worms you must have been busy.
