Surfing Waves

I was wondering how you are able to do a powerslide on a skateboard and is it called a cutback on a surfboard? (since I dont really know) Anyway I allwas tried to do it and I'm wondering if my skateboard is too big since its a little over my waist and I'm 5'6 or so. I also wanted to know if anyone knows how to do the old school tricks by using your hand on the ground to turn and stuff since that seems cool.
