Any of you based in Hawaii?

Ive been reading about Captain Cook recently, and his rather bi-polar experiences with the natives... (actually reading Hunter S Thompson's "The Curse of Lono", if that means anything ) seems like a ruddy good story! also, whats the deal with the "City of Refuge"? i am into my history, but untill recently have completely overlooked the pacific in the 1700s... cook, bligh, the bounty... all good stuff.

do any of you Owhyhee residents know of any interesting stuff, or a couple of books to read?

I know that he came to New Zealand, didnt stay long at all and didnt seem to impressed with the place. How rude.

curse of lono huh? lono was the celebration god, so i am suprised he/she/it would have a curse.

There is a book called "Hawaii" don't recall the author off the top of my head, it's supposed to be good, but very long. One recent read is "Rape in Paradise", very good non-fiction about rape case in the 30s or 40s.
As for "The Place of Refuge" it was a place where people could go who broke the kapu, and would have been put to death, to find refuge (escape from punishment). I have been there once.

Captain Cook Monument-- a little piece of England in Hawaii. (Literally, the piece of land the monument is on was given to England.)

hawaiiSES - lono doesnt actually curse the guy, hunter S thompson is just using the history of the place to tell his own story as well. read fear and loathing in las vegas, or pretty much any other of his books to get a flavour of his original writing style.

Not read the book but did enjoy the film .

Now you have to pay to get in, it's a National Park.
They have Tikis there that have barnacles on their rear area that make it look like something else, I have a picture of it somewhere, but couldn't find it on the computer I am using (not mine).

i saw the movie and read parts of the book, i was just being a smartass.
