I had to say that both are equal, because they are both SO different.

I have played both games. I was asked to play American Football for the Welsh National team and I worked at Bath Rugby Club during their hayday in the early 90s (they had many of the England Team at the time).

The thing is, US football is all about strategy and specific assignment of roles to each player for short bursts, whereas Rugby is much more fluid and people know their overall job for the game. The coach can make tweaks throughout, but it's more about the specific players.

As a result Rugby is less complicated to understand. But I don't think anyone can deny the moments of genius that happen in both games.

I used to be a major NFL fan in the mid-80s (big Redskins fan). It was a really new "geeky" sport in the UK at that time. It ended up being a massive playground game - which I was ace at, obviously.
I haven't followed it in 15 years... But would love to start watching it again - but I dont have cable.

Since moving to Aus, the whole State Of Origin thing has given me my first 'excitement' for league. Never ever followed it in the UK (it rarely gets a look-in over football). I like it - but I do find it frustrating sometimes "JUST PASS THE BLOODY BALL!!!" ....& such

I reckon NFL - more chances to swipe the ball coz of more passing - & that's when a crowd spits out their hotdogs....!

Kicks ass?

Ok ignore for the fact that 'American football' is actually a bastardized form of rugby then went to the 'new world' with the colonists and look at the fact that they are basically the same game...

See the mess rugby players get into - note that Americans don't feel safe playing it without massive f**king body armour.

Uh... isn't it Aussie Rules Football ??? (I guess everyone calls it somehin different) I played both games & RUGBY is WAAAAAAAY more hardcore kid. I tackled a guy w/ such force once they had 2 call/put him in an abmulance right away. It's a dangerous dangerous game kids.

The body armour thing is a double edged sword cos whilst it does protest the wearer, it also make the wearer feel more invincible and go in harder cos it hurts less so causing more damage. Also helmets are a good weapon - bad headbut without pain to the agressor, that don't happen in Rugby or Aussie Rules. Its very different.

I have to go with rugby in this pole though, since im english. Gutted we lost to scotland in the six nations recently though, whether the team has bonded enough for the next world cup in '07 i dunno...
