"So Much To Say"

Postby Frustrated Guitarist » Mon Apr 12, 2004 4:17 am

:x First of all I posted this to get help on a topic I did not quite understand, not B.S. prejudice opinions. I do not play just what people want to hear, does anyone know what inspiration is?? I am a musician, I get paid for what I do, I get music scholarships for $20,000 a year. Do any of you get paid for surfing or college scholarships? If you see a picture of a beautiful woman and you say "Damn, she is fine!!" Does that mean you have'nt experienced anything about her? No, you have. If you see a picture of an elegant sunset on t.v. and you have had a horrible and gloomy day and it cheers you up just to know somewhere, somehow there is beauty and elegance in the world, are telling me you have'nt experienced in someway, somehow that sunset???? I'm trying to add to your world of surfing: Friend not Foe. Ever heard song that just all of a sudden made you want to pick up your board and go surfing. Let me tell you something about music: Music inspiries everyone. If someone can paint a picture of horseback riding, but they don't horse back ride, then why can't I write a song about surfing, even if i don't surf. Music allows me to be apart of what ever I see in my head, in other words when I play, I see images, I can transport myself anywhere to anytime, whether it's lying on the beaches in the Virgin Islands too sailing through the universe. No drugs required. Now everyone is probably going to say "what a jerk", but maybe to someone, somewhere I just made since......

have you ever heard the expression " only a surfer knows the feeling"?
if you want to write a song about surfing by watching surf vids, reading mags or by checking out sights like this,go for it, but the only way you will ever be able to really write a song about surfing that you truely beleive in yourself is by actually trying it. its a bit of a spiritual experience.
feel free to write a song bout surfing though, i'd be keen to hear more surf related music :-) !

dude, sorry for any offence caused by my last post to you, it's a bit of a sensitive subject to me, i can't stand passionless music. but you were asking for our passions in surfing, so you aren't looking at something, and experiencing it yourself. like the comparison you made of horseback riding, someone could be inspired to paint it, even if they've never done that... thats cool, so you do that, write a song about how surfing inspires you, watching it, or whatever it means to YOU don't ask what it means to us, you get me?

yeah, soz for any offense but can't really help you with that one. There's no set genre for surfers. I'm sure we're all inspired by different people at different times I guess.

Why not have a go at surfing - maybe you will be inspired to write a song about it.

I am not sure i realy got what is going on, But i would say:

Writing a song or anything else about a subject you don´t know, but somehow touches you is ok. Just as people like music and dont play anything.

The problem is that if you make a song about surf and don´t know about it, people who know surf will tend to say you are fake or something if they disagree with what you wrote. That is a risk you have to be willing to take. And would take even if you surfed, as there are many ways of seing surf. If you write a song saying that surf is about destroying waves lips many people will think you are an idiot. If you write it is a way to relax and enjoy and easy fun ride some people will think you are no surfer at all.

One very important thing to an artist is to survive criticism, even if it is agressive and unjustified.

I am not saying people should not criticise or that we should not complain wen people want to put us down, just saying that´s the natural way of things.
