Hawaii hurricane activity

Postby oldmansurfer » Mon Aug 20, 2018 11:53 pm

Just in case you haven't heard yet, there is a hurricane headed our way, Hurricane Lane. Looks like it will be making some surf for the south shores of Maui and Big Island at least. Current track is predicted to pass close to Kauai. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38890702/lane-remains-a-category-3-hurricane-as-it-churns-closer-to-islands

It's not a big worry......yet.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Ok so now I am starting to get worried since they are predicting it to pass close to Kauai. However it is slow moving and a lot can happen between Tuesday and Friday http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38890702/hurricane-watch-issued-for-hawaii-maui-counties-as-lane-nears-state

Well it's weakening as predicted and now the forecasts take Lane further away from Kauai. For a while it was closer and closer. I guess it's a matter of waiting to see if and when it turns to the west as that will dictate what impact it is likely to have on Kauai. The big Island just recovering from the volcano disaster now has to deal with 24 inches of rain in 24 hours. Hope Punatuna is safe. The only good thing is they have lots of emergency people already there to help with the after effects of Hurricane Lane. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38890702/hurricane-watch-issued-for-hawaii-maui-counties-as-lane-nears-state

I saw on CBS that there are surfers and bodyboarders having a good time at wkkk beach!

Do surfers get really excited about the swell that they are getting or are they also worried about the hurricane?

Once you're ready for the hurricane, you might as well enjoy the swell. I hope to tomorrow. we'll see

For all you 50 year old heavy set surfers, here's some Hurricane Lane surf. Try watching from 2:29 mark. But before that got some really good surfing from the style master Emerick. ( and you know it's hurricane surf if he's wearing a leash )

Yeah I would enjoy surfing those waves too. But I would wear a leash even if it isn't that big :)

Pardon my ignorance, is that how the real Hawaiians look? They are kinda like a tanned version of Japanese. Why do I hear that Hawaiians are okay with Japanese? Don't they remember the Pearl harbor incident?

Emerick's last name is Ishikawa. He is an American of Japanese descent. He is not of native Hawaiian ancestry ( or Kanaka Maoli in the Hawaiian language ). I think Hawaiians are more pissed off about the illegal overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy and imprisoning of their Queen by greedy capitalist American business men.

Japanese were brought into Hawaii as laborers so locals feel less threatened by them then by those who own/run the islands

There were lots of Japanese in Hawaii pre WW2. In the 1920s about 40% of the population had Japanese ancestors.

Japanese, Chinese, and Filipinos were brought in as laborers. When I grew up there were more Filipinos than any other race, then Japanese then Chinese then mixed Hawaiian then pure Hawaiian and Caucasians were the minority. It’s attitude that angers the locals. It’s the Caucasians that have the wrong attitude

This really sparked my interest in Hawaii. My granddad grew up with Japanese education and he is very brainwashed. He speaks Japanese and loves Japan. In his later years, he insisted that I should go to Hawaii with him when I was really young. I kinda wished I'd gone, maybe I would've started surfing much earlier! However I highly doubt that though.

Even till now, I keep thinking Hawaii = Miami/Florida/Socal. There is nothing to see there. Just 5 star chain hotels everywhere but with good waves. I'm really intrigued with the culture and definitely would have to visit the place.

OMS, when you said wrong attitude. I'm assuming it's like the rich people Mark Zuckerberg buying up all the lands and building his fortress?

I just read this http://mauinow.com/2012/01/13/opinion-h ... t-america/
100 years is a long time. I guess the grudge will be there forever for overthrowing the monarchy illegally. I always thought that people will forget about it after a few generations because they can not relate to it. It does not affect their life at all. Also I would think America did them a favor by bringing them out of poverty and invested heavily into the infrastructure hence why it is a world famous tourist spot. That should've improved their standard of living and life?

Yes many haoles come to Hawaii and want to change it to fit their own wishes without consideration for the people who have been living here for generations. It's not only the rich but also your everyday tourists and people who move here who have no consideration for the land or the people. Unfortunately the Hawaiian population was decimated by measles mumps and other introduced diseases made worse by venereal diseases which hampered their fertility. Isolated populations have never been exposed to these diseases and have no innate immunity to those diseases and lots of the population dies as a result of this (no vaccines back then). So the haoles who wanted workers to work in their agricultural fields brought people in to work for them. Thus Hawaii is truly a mixed plate of races.

That author doesn't accurately describe the situation. Hawaii is racially mostly not Hawaiian. Their culture didn't come from the Hawaiian monarchy. Some Hawaiian are happy the way things are some are not. Hawaiians rarely agree on anything political. An example of how Hawaii has changed is their food. The staples of Hawaiian diet were fish and poi and maybe sweet potato and coconut. Now if you go to a luau or feast they will always have poi but the poi is most often fairly fresh whereas the Hawaiians preferred it fermented a bit several days old. Besides the Kalua pig and lau lau which are traditional Hawaiian food they will also usually have lomi salmon made with salmon tomatoes and onions none of which is native to Hawaii. They will most likely have chicken heka which is Asian not Hawaiian and rice which also is not Hawaiian and macaroni salad which is not Hawaiian. But this has become the traditional Hawaiian meal. It's all fairly complicated and there is no unified voice for the Hawaiian people because they disagree anyway. Just study Hawaiian culture prior to the haoles and in someways it seemed idyllic and others brutal and unfair. One common mistake Hawaiians always make and continue to make is to try to go back to the old ways not realizing the old ways was what got them to where they are today. My haole opinion is that they should preserve their old ways but move on to other things, become a part of the world instead of trying to go back to when they weren't a part of the world..... just like they did with their food. But I am not Hawaiian by blood so I don't mater.

Hawaiians also less threatened by Japan people because they look more like Hawaiians than Haoles. When I first began working in HI, circa 1988, Hawaiians resented US mainland Caucasians buying lots of real estate. The factual reality is that people from Japan were buying a larger percentage of Hawaii. But, the Hawaiians were okay with this (double standard).
