Hawaii volcano activity

Postby oldmansurfer » Wed Jun 06, 2018 6:58 pm

in the last couple days an estimated additional 500 home were destroyed. Lava has covered a 7.7 square mile area. There have been 9900 earthquakes since the start of this activity. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38344763/its-saddening-massive-river-of-lava-wipes-out-hundreds-of-homes
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Just about every other morning when I am getting ready for work there is an emergency announcement that comes over the TV that I have tuned to a classic rock music radio on tv station. It says that there was an earthquake of a magnitude around 5.3 and that no tsunami was expected. I don't recall this morning but I was very tired from having to work at 1 am.

There's a whole lot of shakin' goin' on. Up to 300 earthquakes a day. Some can be noticed by some here on Kauai but none that I have noticed. The earthquakes are a result of lava moving underground so the eruption is likely to continue. the latest update http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38398082/more-than-5-weeks-on-and-no-relief-in-sight-from-ongoing-eruptions

It's so routine now to hear there was another earthquake 5.2 or so and no tsunami expected http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38404624/53-magnitude-quake-rattles-kilaueas-summit-no-tsunami-generated

My Agung here in Bali finally erupted 30min ago. Full lava flow 80km north at the mountain. Pictures are a half hour old.

In Hawaii if your house burns down then your insurance will pay but for lava covering it you are not covered

The trick would be to burn it down before the lava gets to it. That is if we can predict where the lava will flow.

If you own the land it is a total loss for a while. It will be a long time before it can have a house built on it and no insurance company will insure it. But if you can get the money for the house and purchase another lot without lava then you are set to rebuild

Lava, earthquakes, fire, explosions and now storms and lightning added to the list of destrructive forces brought about by the volcano http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/2018/07/04/hawaii-news/volcano-update/lava-fueled-storm-produced-more-than-1000-lightning-strikes/

Here a geologist talks about lave being 800 meters away from a school. That was 2 days ago and it has been covered by lava now .
Interesting talking about the crater floor dropping suddenly more than 2 meters. https://youtu.be/fVeK37_c0zQ

The volcano is slowing way down which may or may not be the end of the eruption. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/38816396/scientists-report-fissure-8-has-almost-shut-down-completely
