Hey surfchick,

Welcome to the board.

I reckon you should do a surf school. I don't know whether there are any great ones in the Newcastle area, but if you can get down to devon do a weekends/weeks course at surf south west. [i did and it was great]

That way all your boards/wetsuits are taken care of, and you get great advice, with lots of other beginners too.

Either that or just head to your nearest coast and check out the scene....is there anyone surfing there at all [try the weekends],..if not it could be cos its flat/mushy, or cos you just DONT surf there. Anyway if people are,...hire yourself out a board and wetsuit and have a go!!! Stay in the whitewash at first [where the wave has already broken] and make sure you ask people about any rips/rocks/dangers before you head in like a headless chicken. If you have a mate who surfs already then head down with them and hope they take you under their wing,..i mean you can always bribe them with bird food.

Or,...put a post up for surf buddies in the Newcastle area, and see if you can meet up with them.

Hope that helps!!!

Yeah, if its newcastle upon tyne, i'm down this way too. My board just arrived today and am geared up to get myself in the water sometime this week or next. Just need to purchase some gloves and boots as soon as i can catch the shop open. (which is quite the challenge as some may know) Drove down there today to try and found it shut. It was a well foggy day though, so can't really blame them.

I was in the same position as you a few months ago and am now all prepared just about to get out there and brave the waters. Let me know if it's good old geordieland you're in cos I'm just gonna be diving in head first on my own with this surfing thing and if you're looking for someone to start out with I'd be happy to help. :) Or I could give you any advice you may need, I did a lot of investigating and asking questions to get the best idea of what I was doing and getting myself into....it's all great. :P

cool, sounds good. I'm gonna feel a right idiot to begin with I reckon, going out and braving it all for the first time on my own but it should be fun. Hopefully there might just be one other person out there and I'll feel better, rather than a load of regulars who know what they're doing. Got some mates who have offered to watch me so that's pretty cool. If I dissappear for more than a minute, hopefully they'll notice. Just kidding. None of them are strong swimmers anyway so I'll be lucky. can't wait.

Was quite surprised, cos I took a drive down on Sunday evening and there were hardly any waves to speak of but about 7 or so surfers in the water and a couple more going in. Was good to see and made me think, I'll give it a go even if the waves are like 1 foot. :)

Hey guys
Cheers for all your helpful replies about getting started in newcastle. Yeah unfortunately its newcastle England and not newcastle, aus. I'm really up for learning to surf only problem is i dont have any gear or any experiance (if you dont count body boarding). So i need to rent some gear or something. Anyone got any ideas? i also need someone very nice to teach me! i heard the place to surf is tyemouth but i do know if they have an surfing schools there...

check out...https://www.tynemouthsurf.co.uk if you pop into the shop, the guy who runs it is Steve, he's very helpful. Just went down there today actually to buy some boots and stuff. He'll tell you everything you need to know. They do do surfing lessons through the shop which are supposed to be starting up this month so you may be in luck. I'm going out for my first surf hopefully tomorrow or early next week. There were a couple of people learning to surf out there today in the white water so I don't feel so bad. The waves were pretty good too, I wish I had taken my board down but didn't have much time on my side in any case.
If you do get round to getting in the water. I'm a beginner myself but would be happy to get together for a surf. May not be able to teach you much, know a few things but you may feel better if you're out with someone to start off with. Just let me know.

Yeah, what actually happened is I was really keen to go for a surf on Saturday but kind of left it too late. I work nights on a weekend so I've got to be really disciplined to get myself down there. I actually was down there just buying some boots. The surf looked amazing, I was wishing I had my board with me when I got down there. I did also notice a couple of people in the white water learning, so that made me feel better. I should've just got up and got down there with my board. Sunday was also a case of not having anyone to come along to the beach with me but I think I'm just gonna brave it if I can't find someone to drag along. Half of my mates have offered to come watch me surf so I was gonna try and bring someone along for the first couple of times. My plan is to get out there tomorrow afternoon, hopefully wednesday too and then on the weekend as well. :D Not sure what the surfs gonna be like but may just check it out. I woke up with a cold this afternoon and am supposed to work tonight. Might ring in sick and hopefully be ok tomorrow for a surf. We'll see. Do you only tend to get down there on the weekends?
Just a quick question too (sorry bout the essay): you know when you're waxing your board. Mines got the deck grip on the bottom, do I wax all the way from the bit where the grip ends upwards or do you leave a bit of a gap and start a bit further up where your left foot is more likely to be placed?

Sounds like it'd be great if you two girls could meet up to try it.

It's always best to have someone to learn with - that way you get to share the feeling of getting up for the first time etc.

Good luck to both of you.

Thanks sinista.

Surfchick: Just let me know if you wanna get together, I'm definitely getting down there this week, even if I'm not over my cold and it gives me pneumonia. :P

when your starting its probably best to just put loads of wax on, just to make sure unless your confidant of popping in the same place every time youll probably need it. Dont forget the rails either i know one guy smashed his face when he tryed to pop and there was no wax on his rails.

With regards to the surf this week it will be flat until the weekend (maybe friday) until the notherlies start blowing. Brrrr it gonna be a cold easter

cheers kieran. yeah my bro told me bout putting wax on the rails, i'll certainly be doing that. :) just can't remember what else he said bout it. Now I know, I'll be sure to cover the whole area i reckon.

Aaaah, that's bad news bout the week ahead, i was dead set on getting out tomorrow and also have the WHOLE of wednesday to myself to get out. Oh well, maybe friday it is. Stupid me agreed to work good friday for some extra cash, maybe i'll go into work tonight and pull a sickie on friday... :P Who knows, we'll see.

You reckon it's not worth gettin down tomorrow then? I s'pose if there's no waves to speak of it'll be bit pointless. :(

Ive had a quick look at the charts the swell direction seems to be changing towards the east coast tonight, dont quote me on this saffa but you might get about 1ft of surf on wednesday. Its good to get out in something small for your first session anyway. Try ringing the tynemouth shop before you go and see what he says, the report is usually up around 11am ish.
