Moving Hemispheres

Postby libby » Tue May 17, 2005 1:04 pm

Ok Im moving to New Zealand for a year in just over 6 weeks time  and was just wondering if anyone else here has moved to another country and has any advice to help things go a bit smoother. Anything at all really. Advice on shipping boards, excess luggage, what to take, what not to take, what you miss the most etc etc

Anyone else going anywhere exciting this summer? What are you all up to?

Just being nosy ...

Libs :D

Well, I moved to England about 8 years ago and although it took me a good year to settle I think that was a lot to do with my age etc. If you're moving on your own you'll probs land up having an awesome time all in all although there will always be hard times when you miss people or places or certain things. That comment about collecting things is true, keep everything to a minimum, I wasn't planning on going back home so wasn't an issue for me but if you're only going for a year just try not to buy things that are not necessary.

Enjoy it while you can cos a year will fly by and before you know it you'll be heading home. You'll probs make loads of mates and leave with having made some good connections for you to see again on any visits back to NZ.

Just take minimal amounts of stuff over with you and enjoy it. If you think of any direct questions you wanna ask me then feel free cos can't think of much to say about it but have had the experience so could answer any queries... :)
As you know, I'm also planning on travelling in Sept for 7 months so will be doing a similar thing again although it is slightly different to relocating. :P

Pack your bags with everything you think you'll need...

Now take it all out again, and pack everything you'll actually need...

...NOW unpack it all over again, throw two thirds of it out, and pack whats left

Now you've got what you need.

But you all talk funny, you drive holdens, drink cat-piss beer and consider Kylie a national icon ?????
Sometimes you may have better surf but you've got to battle 300 filthy little grommets all fighting for the same wave.

And our sheep are real puuuurdy over here too :-)

Sure. Our mules are very puuurdyiest...especially when you're all sauced-up on Grolsh love potion...
But personally I much prefer the very recently introduced species however, they're shorter with a lighter colour coat than normal- almost blond actually, with a much louder "bray" than our local ones.

Ha ha obviously i cant reply because because i'm revising far too hard.... But if I was to reply then i would say that a new species of mule is impossible because mules cant breed, which means natural selection cant act on their genome which means they cant diverge, postzygotic barriers to speciation and all that

And whos bray you calling loud Mitch?

Ahhhh, I didn't say new, I said "introduced"...as in transported from another country...
Another thing about these recently introduced species is they are much more stubborn and can be quite stroppy at times, their Bray sounds quite differnt to our local species, almost with an Essex twang to it. Their food of choice is a rare & exotic substance called "Becks", perhaps you've heard of it?

oh well, since I don't have uk tv I can't take part here...but I'd like to try a wife beater...just for namesake. We have a rare exotic larger called biker-beer here, comes in a glass bottle shaped like a stripper with a top you can drink through while roaring along on your Fat-Boy at 70 miles a hour while wearing your leather vest I imagine... Excellent...
