Surfing Waves

How many of my surfing Bruddahs and Sistahs have dogs? Those that do, know dogs settle into routines. Dogs know when to expect certain things: when to sleep, when they'll be fed, when the orange cat will take his daily stroll across the garden, and much more. When order goes according to their comprehension, then all is fine.

My big Roxy Ridgeback is no exception. She has clear ideas of right and wrong and what time things are supposed to occur. Today follows a recent clock change for daylight savings time. So darkness comes earlier in the evening. On top of this, the mailman was later than usual. Roxy was overly agitated by the combined occurrence of 17:00 sundown and the mailman arriving at near dark. Roxy wanted to let the mailman know things are WRONG. Roxy growled and barked within the house. She not only chewed the mail pushed through the slot into the house, she tried to accost the mailman through a closed window. The consequence could have been far worse than it was. No one was hurt and the dog did not pursue the mailman through the broken window glass (through a hole not even large enough for her head to pass).

There is a silver lining, I suppose. Instead of going to work first thing in morning, I'll replace the broken pane with new glass. For the technically inquisitive. The glass is single pane and the pane meaures approximately 19 x 27 inches (48 x 68 cm).

Here's Roxy on a sunny day (pre-time daylight savings time change), bone in paw, and when everything was RIGHT with the world.

I have fond memories of replacing single pane at my parents house. My brothers and I regularly put the football through the window while playing in the back garden. My Dad got tired of fixing them so taught me to do it.

Can't wait to meet Roxy soon. Hope she has lots of energy for me and the missus!

On that that kind of glass looks dangerous. They are not the safety ones where they shatter?

BaNZ,
protection glass is used in modern commercial buildings. It behaves more like automobile glass when broken. But, there is still plenty of simply very thick glass in older commercial buildings. It'll crack before it shatters. Modern homes and replacement windows are usually dual pane and thicker glass is used. These two window types will shatter. My home was constructed in 1950 and has original windows. That is why the windows are single pane and the glass is so thin. We didn't see what happened. Only heard it. My guess is Roxy lightly impacted the glass or her bark broke it. Afterwards, she nonchalantly walked away from the crime scene.

Ol' Man, I know what you mean. Some people go overboard applying human emotion and thought to dog behavior. But, every one of the 4 large dogs I've had seem to have their own sense of what is acceptable and what is not.

By the way, the TSA agent made the poodle assume the position and did a pat down to do a bomb check before putting him in the cage, for real.

Something for all you window glazers above: In the course of my window repair, glaze was applied by me. I was talking to a good old boy from Alabama about it. He owns an 85 year old home (that's old by US standards) with wood frame windows. He's also very good at window glazing and gave me this tip:

"I can't think of a worse job to do, personally."

That cracked me up!

This is the window that Roxy Ridgeback broke. I bought glass, cut it, and installed it. BaNZ recognized the installed glass is thicker than the original, just in case Roxy tries to break through again.

The photo is taken from inside the house. Mrs. Morini placed Christmas lights outdoors. The orange flowers are Aloe rubroviolacea. The hummingbirds love the aloe vera flowers. We watch humming birds every day . Mrs. Morini keeps a pair of binoculars near this window so we can see the hummingbirds in giant magnification.

The blue lights on the right side of the photo are Ms. Corey's outdoor lights across the street. She's my optometrist.

Roxy Ridgeback chews the mail as it comes through the slot, but the cat doesn't even allow the mail to pass. This is so FUNNY!!
