2 or 3 weekends a month... but then its a mammoth three/four day session wherever there is swell, sleeping as near to the beach as I can get away with.

Then I go to work during the week for a rest before the next session...

I surf at least once daily, if there are waves to surf on I'll get at least 2 surfs in on both Sat & Sun, if there is a reasonable wave I'll get 3-4 surfs in Sats & Suns. My record is just under 8 hours in the water on one day (with snack breaks & a nap midday however)(The joys of living 30 secs from my local). I go to work during the week to recover.

I surf most days but on days like today, it's blown out and stormy so I'll skip it. Like Brent, my max is about 8 hours- no naps here though, maybe a break for lunch. I can go 6 hours pretty easily if the surf is good. We've had some great swells recently so I've been pulling 6-8 hour days left and right. On weekends, that's 8 straight hours, on Weekdays, it's broken up into before and after work (things are slow right now). Water temp is about 45- and I've only put on a dry wetsuit once in the past month!

i get to the sea more now than i used to- bout once a month, soem months not at all, depending whats goin on, and i spent all last summer there, but when i am down i surf everyday, regardless of conditions, twice a day or more, and i get into a cold wetsuit with a smile on my face at having the chance to do it.

What VaB, you can surf 6-8 straight hours without food or more importantly water?
I am curious as I'm the fittest person I know and I'm good for a hard 3-3.5 hour surf at a time - max before I need carbs and water, possibly longer in summer when I don't use as much energy just keeping warm. I may be able to stay out longer, perhaps an hour more if pushed, but unless I take fuel in, in advance, (giving 2-4 hours worth of energy for later) I'll be depleted for the next surf session and not really doing it justice.
What are you doing preparation wise and what do you eat before a 6 hour session in 45 degree water?
Curious.

Brent, great question- I think the major difference is the surf. A good swell for us is clean 3-4 faces. That, and I longboard. As far as preparation, I don't do anything special. I'm pretty wiped by the end of the session and typically get out of the water when I start making some really bad mistakes or just fall over for no apparent reason other than I lost my balance.

You bring up some really good points, I should break more often for water and I bet my surfing will improve!!

In the summer, when I do surf that long, I tend to suck down a few sodas and maybe a hotdog. I'm talking about the full calorie soda. A friend of mine does these 50 and 100 mile running races and many of those guys eat junk food along the way b/c it is so calorically dense. Sad that you must exercise for 6 hours straight or run 50 miles to actually justify soda.

Oh yep that makes sense. "Low Stress" surfing :-) & serious intake of crap food. Yep that'd work.
Likewise my wee brother does those nutty ultra distance running races, he lives on flat coke, mars bars (he refers to them as steak & chips in a wrapper) and gingernut biscuits when racing. Excellent.
Good answer -thanks.

Being in the military, I have to be in the right spot at the right time, but I never miss the opportunity!
