I agree that it is hard to end these kinds of practices, but it definitely can be done. The US is a hell of a lot different today socially than it was in the 1950s. Where I live beating your spouse is completely unacceptable. It still happens here, though, but it doesn't have any sort of social acceptance whatsoever. The social norms do not dictate that a man has to beat his wife because some social taboo was broken. Don't get me wrong, though, there are social norms where I live that I find utterly repellent. I'm grateful that many of the most stupid norms from the past are no longer condoned publicly. People are still struggling against deformed social attitudes. This reminds me of the great film
