...earthquake!

Queensland - not generally known for its seismic activity - just had a 5.4 quake. It was a pretty good shake!

Now, I know that for all of you in, for example, Japan, that's no big thing, but it was my first, let me enjoy it

I have only felt 2 earthquakes in my life both less than that. The first one I was outside and felt the ground shake. The second one was a little stronger and I was in my house, thought a big truck was driving by but the shaking got really obvious and stuff started falling off from shelves or wherever. The second was a 3.2 on the Big Island so much less on Kauai. Don't bother going to the beach to try to catch a tidal wave, it takes like a 7.1 to generate a tidal wave.

The world is coming to an end.....these things are popping up more often where they'd not been before, and active areas like around here are getting more than usual ....last couple of weeks we've had airport closures due to area volcano eruptions clouding visibility......all of that and no waves directly resulting though if you ask residents of Thailand or Aceh is a blessing....

My last holiday: Greece. Earthquake in Crete 6.3
My holiday before that: Bali. Earthquake in Bali 6.8
My next holiday: Japan....

Moral: don't follow me on holiday. In particular, around Easter next year I recommend everyone leave Japan.

Hmmm, wonder if the bookies will take a bet on that? I'm sure I should be able to make some money with insider info like that

Apparently, those in the water didn't notice a thing (not that there were many out there today as it was almost flat), so for once I'm glad I stayed at home and worked this morning - I've always wanted to feel an earthquake, and I'd have been really upset if I'd missed it :D

They are saying that this morning's tremor might be a 'foreshock' with more to come...

The ones that go side to side are okay. The ones that go up and down are terrible. In Tokyo, about every 2 weeks there's an earthquake. Some times it feels like a huge 18 wheeler driving by.

I was living in japan in 1978 when there were three 6 eathquakes (including a 7) within a month plus numerous aftershocks. Most seemed to happen around 2am. Don't think I slept for a few months, tough when you are 8.

As waikikichan will know, you do frequent earthquake drills at school (not that it helped in my holidays when I just ran outside with the kids and hoped nothing fell off the roof); and the japanese building techniques nowadays are amazing

My other half used to live in japan, so she was completely blase about QLD's little tremor. There's me (and the rest of Queensland) all excited, and she's just

Sadly, no (sadly because I'd like some objective evidence!), not in our house.
It was a good wobble though - I was out on my front porch/deck (a big slab of concrete) and it pitched me up and down. The windows of the house were doing that 'twang' noise like when you put something cold in hot water, and I was just about to jump down onto the garden when it stopped all of a sudden.

Plenty of people reporting that there garage floors have now got big cracks in them

Apparently, earthquakes are like buses...

This time it was a 5.7, and lasted quite a lot longer

The sharks knew they were coming, that's why they are all in N NSW and not in Qld.

I've never had such experience but I suppose that it's rather scary
