Surfing Waves

can anybody tell me some names of universities that are near to the surf? i plan on surfing throughout my degree (in a couple of years time now). all i can find is swansea, and plymouth, but there must be some more? any help appreciated :) x

Ive heard exeter is a good place to surf when your at Uni, and there is Falmouth as well i think!

Don't rule out land-locked Uni's, most have excellent surf clubs with regular trips to the beach! Plus you want to choose a Uni based on the best course for you, remember you can always move to california when your 22, finished your degree, and have lots of money :P

This is totally true - and even if your Uni does not have one you can start one and get money for gear and trips from the student union.

Other places to consider are Newcastle, Portsmouth, Brighton, Aberdeen, Edinburgh - All get surf or are not too far away from it.

I have to agree with everyone. I know it's tempting to choose a Uni based on where it is but go for the best Univ for your future. Funny even in the States Student Unions will set up trips for everyone. I went to school in Amherst Massachusetts 4 hours away from shore and even though I didn't surf I know that they had a surfing club with tons of students getting together on weekends and carpooling over to the beach or even renting a bus to take them. The nice thing about that was everyone in the club was at different levels when it came to surfing skills and so if you look at it, it was free lessons. Good luck picking a Univ.

i can highly recommend newcastle as i went there and still work there now
(although everyone thinks their university is the best dont they). Coming from wales youll probably find the surfs worse quality and less frequent, but the night life up here is a killer. No surf club that i know of so youll probably need a car as its about a twenty minute drive

I went to Southampton and theres always lots of surf trips to Bournemouth and Corwall, plus its a 'proper' Uni, which is why I didnt go somewhere like Plymouth, which although I'm sure is fine doesnt have as good a reputation (unless mining geology is your bag...). Bristol is good too, but I dont have experiance of the surf club. It also help if you do a surfy type degree (Oceanography at southampton for example!) as all the peeps on the course will likely as not be surfers too!

I went to Southampton Uni and the surf club was awesome. £25 for a weekend in Newquay (£30 including board and suit hire) including accommodation and evening meals (normally Tuna Chilli).

It's true they do go at least once a month and sometimes book out the whole Youth Hostel on the cliffs at Perranporth. Also Bournemouth is only 1/2 hour away and can get real good, plus with talk of an artificial reef at Boscombe pier, this could turn in to the best place on the central south coast.

Can't recommend the Southampton Surf Club enought (apart from they did vito my idea for the T-shirt logo: "Surfers Against Canoeists", a variation on a theme!!)

yeah, newcastle is great! As a town, it's an awesome place and a really good night life. I know Northumbria Uni (in Newcastle) has a surf club. I plan on gettin in this year or next so can't really comment on the club but know that it exists last time i checked....good luck with it all. :D

Aberdeen is the way forward, honestly! Really really close to the beach and the only real fault with the surf is the water temp! Plus the surf club runs annual trips to Newquay for the BUSA surf champs and always have a trip abroad as well....plus if you're going for an arts degree you get an automatic MA instead of a BA in Scotland. Sorted...

Aberystwyth is the only uni I know of where you can walk to over 3 different breaks from campus. :D
It has a rocking surf club that is very actived doing club day trips every week and trips to Gower, Newquay, France and Ireland every few weeks plus a bit of drinking thrown in. 8)
Their womans team is especially good coming first in the BUSA surfing championships.
It's a good uni too with loads of great courses and fantastic nightlife and the cheapest drinks you'll find anywhere.
I've just had the best 3 years of my life here and my surfing has come on so much. The surf is slightly less consistant than South Wales (I should know cos I'm from down your way) but when you living right next to a couple of reef breaks if they are working your in there, no faffing around with travelling anywhere and the locals are cool, very friendly no agro.
It's one to think about.

Plymouth and Exeter - you have access to all the southwest pretty much!

Bristol - still close but a bit of a drive

Bournmouth - Inconsistant southcoast :(

South Wales - Speaks for its self.. usualy a treck to the Gower or freshwater..

Eastcoast unis, Durham etc... I know a few pallies here authough inconsistant and cold still a good crack and has had the best surf in the UK over the last winter

Scotland - COLD! but excelent swells on the west and east coasts.

Why dont you drop the Unis surf clus a mail or visit the websites...

Watergirl's right, you know (how's it going WG, fancy meeting you here!!) Aber does rock - had an ace session last night with a bunch of mates out till 11, guessing when waves would come rolling out to the darkness. And the uni club is full of very sound people, although i hear the new president is a little odd...
As well as the three breaks within walking distance, there are a bunch of others within fifteen minutes drive.... :lol: :lol: so much lushness....

Ross and Sinistapenguin, is there an actual surf club in Southampton? 'cause on the website there is only a canoe and windsurfing club, other than that it looks like the perfect uni for me :D im gonna do medicine.
