Advice on setting up a blog or website

Postby Rock bus » Fri Dec 06, 2013 11:41 pm

Hi all

I am a regular writer/contributor to an online music fanzine. Unfortunately, the owner is looking to pack it in shortly and whilst I may have the opportunity to write for some different on line sites I am contemplating setting up my own.

I have started doing some research and I am thinking of initially setting something up on word press. I will also probably look to get my own domain name so I have some independence.

I wouldn't hold myself out as any sort of IT expert so really need something simple and not too time consuming.

I should add, that this is purely a hobby which I do for the love of music so the only thing I hope to earn out of it is the odd free album or gig ticket.

Anyone have any tips, advice or suggestions of things to look at??

Any help very gratefully received

Cheers

Hey mate,

If you need something relatively easy look at word press how ever, a quality website that is aesthetically pleasing on the eye and unique to you is not easy to come by and require some php, html and psychology knowledge.

There is plenty of premade themes out there as well as plugins, but using a theme means you will not be unique, 9/10 decent looking themes are used by 1000's of others.

Yeah if you want something professional hire a professional. If you are a do it yourself kind of person, you can take classes and buy books and learn to do it yourself. I took online classes on webpage building just for fun. It's really a blast creating a bunch of code then viewing it through your browser. so cool but it does take some learning.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

Blogger is the easiest to set up and use, but Word Press is pretty simple too (it's as complex as you want it to be). As far as looking professional, I'd go with Word Press. Of course, those recommendations are if you want something on a free platform. A real pro looking blog or site will cost you a few bucks to have a graphic designer/tech person do it for you. Prices range widely depending on what you want.

One of my advice is to have a good content for your blog cause aside from being a student of school of economics, i am also an expert blogger and content is my key.
