Real Life Robinson Crusoe (in UK)

Postby billie_morini » Fri Jun 17, 2011 12:14 am

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... -home.html

Real-life castaway who has spent 26 years building a remote home from driftwood has been told his shack in Exmoor National Park is illegal. He has fashioned hammock chairs from fishing nets salvaged from the Bristol Channel and cooks outside over firewood.

Great photos and full story at link.

It's unfortunate "they" won't leave him alone.

I'm not really sure what all the fuss is. I read the article and the problem didn't seem to be with him actually living there, but that he had applied for ownership of the shack.
Still, after all this media exposure I should think his quiet existence is now well and truly over for a while.

Indeed. It's nice to think that there's people doing this sort of thing dotted around the place.
Good luck to him.

Agreed. There's also a guy like that that lives on an island on the Thames in London. The island is submerged twice a day by high tide so he stays in his hammock up a tree at that point. Then when the tide goes out he returns to the ground to cook, etc. He's actually a pretty clever old dude who just decided he'd had enough of the rat race. Total respect to him although naturally the council evicted him as well last I heard even though he'd been there for years without any fuss.

I'll try and dig up an article as I saw it on London evening news earlier this year.
