I've been surfing for a year but until i relocate to the s/w full time this summer i don't get to surf that often so it comes down to hours in the water!

10,000 hours is what it takes to be really F**king good at anything according to research :)

Deepens all on how often you have been in the water but if you been often you should at least be able to pop up and turn and be getting good rides down the face. thats just the least you should be able to do but always rember that people lean at all different speeds so you can not really say what you should be able too do in a year, just keep at it and have fun don't worry how good you are all that matters is that you are have fun nothing esle.

1. Sit on your ‘board easily in the line-up (sky rockets long since gone LOL!)
2. Duck dive to get outside
3. Go out in horrible or good weather
4. Hold your breath for what seems like ages while getting smacked by the waves
5. Unzip your wetsuit when you are exhausted
6. Dribble sea water from your nose at least two hours after getting home
7. Catch 90% of the waves you paddle for
8. Surf 60% of the 90% waves you catch
9. Angle take off on the green waves both ways – one better than the other
10. Get a buzz from just riding down the line
11. Be looking to try some moves like reos, floaters and off the lips
12. Be able to not drop in on others by observing your surrounds at paddle in
13. Accept defeat on a gnarly day !
14. Pump the board and go nuts on a surf rampage of doom, then fall off 10 seconds later !

If you can do all the above that’s good going – now just pick a move and practice, practice, practice :D
