Hi D,
My advice is to make it well known to the local sharks that if provoked, you will bite them back.

Worked for me so far!!

Seriously I wouldn't even let the thought enter your mind - it'll ruin your enjoyment over there. The shark bite rates may be proportionally higher in certain areas but it's still ridiculously, stupidly low odds you'll even meet anyone there who has even seen a real shark!

My wife is exactly the same.

Once in Cape Town (lots of sharks) she stood on a fish whilst we were out surfing. I swear it was like watching one of those cartoons where they run accross the surface of the water!!!!

I guess the other trick is to make sure you are next to someone bigger and juicier than you are in the line up.

the reason florida is the shark bit capital of the world is because so many people go in the water there. The more people that go into the water the more confrontations there will be. dont be scared jus keep ur karma up and hopefuly nothin will happen. if something does happen its a good day to die.

I heard some reports of a like 17 foot somethin, think it was a white shark spotted off the coast, some fishing boat saw it at night. It came up to the boat, rammed it a few times and made a few nice dents, mouthed the motor, decided it liked it, and bit it off. THen it swam off. They had to paddle with their oars like... 5 miles. see theirs sharks

I think once some fisherman got pissed off at the surfers when I was outthere, so they started chumming hardcore, like they threw soo much chopped up fish in. Like where we were surfing, in attempts to try to scare us off I think, but it was funny because only a few people left the water, and someone came under the pier from the other side and tied their lines to the pilings. I still didn't see a shark, but yea, we have alot near there. I hear gora is prety sharky too.

Got a new shark story for ya'll...

On Wednesday, while driving from Dunedin back up to Tauranga (here in NZ) I stopped off at a well-know good right hander just north of Kaikoura, ironically called "meatworks". It's at a spot well known for deep clear cold water, whale watching etc (the continental shelf is only about 2kms out to sea here) I call in there everytime I'm passing. Well anyway, this time I was out by myself, twilight, with a rivermouth just along abit...the whole deal mr greysuit likes. And, I look straight out, it's between sets, deal calm & glassy. What do I see....a "loch-ness" monster type disturbance on the surface about 10 meters away, you know what I mean, something just under the surface & not quite breaking it...like an approching torpedo or something. My number was up, the adrenalin rush is beginning, life starts flashing before my eyes, ...and about 3-4 meters from me this stupid baby seal pokes it's head up.....I swear the little xxxxx started laughing at me....As I fell of my board :-)

 excellent!
Mind you seals can be dangerous, not that I'm wary of them tho as I think they're cool. At a spot near me called Sea Palling some bloke got slammed into by a female being over protective of her pups. The guy was just swimming in the general area and was hit really hard in his thigh - smashed his femur into 4 pieces  !

I love seeing seals in the water around me! It means there aren't any Nobby Clarks in the area. It's when all the seals disappear suddenly that I start to worry.......

I've only seen a shark out of water, the fishermens come with it on the boat, and them hand him.
in algarve, portugal, the climate is very influenced by the north of africa climate... winds, etc.. sometimes we listenin something related to sharks, but theres not any ocurence of any bite 8)

i can't forgot.. the fish was fleshin' big, looks like he was still alive looking to me, i were just 14 or 15 years, the fishers got they're tails and barbatans, I standed there when everybody went out I couldn't say i didn't feel payne.

i got a recordation, two big teeths, one at home and the other on my necklace 8)
