You need to focus on upper body strength mainly as it is vital for paddling out. If you can't paddle out then you can't surf! Its real helpful for those big stormy winter sessions. Swimming everyday down the local pool helps out big time with building muscle and keeping your general fitness up...so my answer is use weights for upper body strength and swim as well...hope this helps!

psuh up, curl ups, and something my dad taught me where you do a push up and as your coming up you bring you feat under your body quickly so that you feet are where your knees were at.... hmm i wonder what this could be for?

do the basic moves with your weights, and go for strength and endurance rather than one or the other.

Usually when I can't get to the gym I do 100 pushups and 200 crunches daily just to keep myself kinda staying strong in my upper body. When you feel like you cant go anymore just remember the extra strength might save your life in the water one day.

I've heard these called "burpees" (I don't know why!) but what you do is push up, bring your legs up like a squat thrust and then do a star jump and reverse the process to go back down again.

Of course a surfer would never need to practice anything like that... ;-)
