Surfing Waves

I'm trying to find new hobbies that don't involve any energy or physical activity. Stuff you can do in bed (no dirty comments, thanks ) or on my many days in hospital would be useful. I just wondered if any of you could think of anything interesting or unusual?

So far, I've had these suggestions:

learning the guitar (really enjoying that one!)
photography (wish I had stuff to photograph??)
painting (I'm more useless than an elephant!)
arts and crafts (not really sure what to do except origami?)
knitting (I think that one was a joke )
crosswords (too much brain power involved sometimes )
watching the entire first and second series of LOST or some such thing (i've been lent all the DVDs )

can you add to my list???????????????????????????????????????

This sounds really weird....but you could write something. You know....poetry, a short story, a song or a monologue or something. Especially if you're missing the surf, you could write about what you're aspirations, surfing wise, are.

The painting one is a good one. But you don't have to paint. Just grab a pen and doodle your local break or your board or where you'd rather be right now. Use your imagination and stoke to get you inspired.

Or, you could read a whole bunch of stuff. You could learn the details of board construction, or wave dynamics, or surf travel or even something like learning the medicinal properties of herbs or a language.

video games, guitar, and reading. just get a bunch of different books. if you want kind of a weird, philosophical, crazy book, check out 'buddah's little finger.' i read it in my madness and madmen in soviet russia class last year. it's really good

World of Warcraft, you wont need (real)freinds or the outside world, just a PC and a subscription, a phone and a pizza number....

don't knock knitting...I knit... haven't done much in a while.. usually do it on long driving or plane trips.

i back the Lost and xbox suggestions. also get adobe photoshop and mess around with your friends surfing pictures, you might get really good with it. maybe paint your fins and if you fish make some lures or something. the best would be eating snickers

Thats a great one that is if you want to become a Zombie (those games are like the modern day drug)

For me other than surfing, its music, reading, and i luv Scrabble if any one else plays on isc.ro my handle is zerxa

how bout listening to music? i dunno.. it seems very useless but it calms me and it cant be detrimental to your guitar playing

Get a great big bag of weed and an iPod

Read some books. You read Surf Nation? Good read.

Read read read read.

Get audio tapes and learn some new languages.

I LOVE knitting havnt done it in years and i know its not uber cool but chunky winter jumpers ARE cool so give it a whirl!

If you're going back to teaching once you're all better start thinking about new idea's you could use in the classroom.

Get in touch and stay in touch with all the people you haven't had time to talk to for the last few years.

DVD's, treat yourself to the sex and the city box set, the shameless box set and the scrubs box set....sorted!!

What are some great inspiring books? I want to get into reading more often but I dont know where to start lol. Helping to improve my grammar and vocabulary skills is always a good thing.

Sorry you're frequently bed-ridden! That sucks. I love reading and watching tv, but I know those can get old after a while. And good for you for learning guitar (I play bass)!

READING: If you're not a huge reader and don't like long stories, try anything by David Sedaris. His books are all a bunch of short, hilarious essays commenting on his weird family and life experiences. Also Sex, Drugs, and CoCo Puffs by Chuck Klosterman is awesome. Again, lots of short 1-6 page hilarious essays, but his are mostly about music and pop culture. Other books that are good for non-readers are bios of bands you like. Or even bands you don't know much about. I recently read The Dirt (Motley Crue bio) and Slash's autobiography. I didn't grow up listening to either band, but I like them both now and mostly it was just entertaining to read about how ridiculous their lives were. If you do consider yourself a reader, my two favorite books of all time are Roots and East of Eden (if you like epic stories that follow generations of a family. And you like 700 page books lol).

ONLINE SCRABBLE: I second I Salute You's suggestion. I used to play Scrabbulous on Facebook all the time before it got shut down - totally addicting. For me it was a great way to get to "hang out" with my friends who live on the other side of the country. We'd pick a time to play some Scrabble and chat online. But you can also play with strangers. There's also online chess or any number of online community games. I like playing The Deadliest Catch on The Discovery Channel's web site. You don't play with people; you just go fish for crab lol.

LEARN A LANGUAGE: there's a free website called LiveMocha.com where you can learn different languages. They're broken up into lessons. It's a really cool resource for being free.

CRAFTS: Are you a boy? There's nothing wrong with boys knitting. There are even books for knitting cool stuff like beanies or wrist bands with stars on them. Cross-stitch is a super easy craft anyone can learn and it can help you pass the time while you're watching tv if you want something to do. I think your friends and family might find it pretty hilarious if you gave them weird cross-stitch pictures to hang on their walls for Christmas/birthdays. =)

DRAWING: are you in the US? If you have $70 or so, you can do an intro to drawing class online through Ed2Go.com...

Sedaris is good for so many freaking laughs! Also, since I am in (as cartman put it in South Park) the 7th layer of hell, I would suggest "Confederacy of Dunces". Poetry reading by Baudelaire, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" or anything involving Hunter S. Thompson. Go back to the vault and pull down some rare Hendrix and trump it with Janice Joplin. Discover Aristotle and his NUMEROUS contributions to modern philosophy..as my best friend a doctorate says, "the most I've gotten laid was when I was studying philosophy". Top all of that with a cherry of surf music to bring you back into what may have put you down to begin with...
