secondary drowning

Postby grammarnazi » Sun Jun 08, 2008 2:54 am

Wow - this is really sad, and kind of creepy. I had never heard of this before. A 10-year-old boy went swimming, inhaled some water, and drowned several hours later at home in bed. I guess the body's reaction to the inhaled fluid is to send more fluids to the lungs, which causes drowning several hours later.

Yep, it's very rare, this incident was well covered in the local news right after it happened. There are signs/symptoms that his parents may not have noticed or thought much of, such as lethargy (they could have just thought that the time he spent swimming really wore him our), and coughing (especially if he had a cold or was recovering from one.

It`s called apnea, secondary drowning. Life guards would be more concerned with this after they pull you out, that's why a lot of people who are saved are sent to hospital even though they think they are ok.

From what I recall of the story, he had never been "rescued", got out of the pool on his own.
