Subaru Sambar Replica VW Camper

Postby Chris*B » Mon May 26, 2008 11:07 am

I'm thinking of getting one of these, they look pretty good for the money.

Has anyone seen or heard anything about them? they are pretty dinky!

Really? You think this looks good? Surely it's only one of those crappy wee vans florists run around in with a two-tone paint job and a VW badge slapped on the front?

For £5000 I'd advise you to just buy a van or if you can a real camper van.

LOL - what a pile of junk! If you think that is 'good for the money', then I'll happily sell you MY T4 for £10k and you'll think it's an absolute bargain........

Wasn't too sure how it would drive. What does yours go like?

Seriously, if you want a camper, get a Unimog, bolt a caravan on the back of it, and start saving up for the petrol.

I don't believe it! Yesterday I saw one of these in Stonehaven (Aberdeenshire). It was made from a Rascal van. I'm still not convinced even seeing one live!

Subaru Sambar Replica VW Camper

Postby Samba » Mon Jul 14, 2008 2:52 pm

Hi folks, not normally the forum type, but this thread is a case of people stamping their prejudice on other people.

I have just bought TWO Sambars, one for me and one for my girl. They ARE a van but wasn’t the VW Type 1/2 a van/ bus? Wasn’t its basic origins part of its charm and surf cred?? They are a compromise on an old VW Bus, something that looks different and I can use every day as well as for weekends.

My Sambars have (on one or other or both) air con, split folding rear bench seats, full length sleeping (I’m 6 foot) with seat down, full length sliding electric glass sunroof, Japanese built and driven, no rust, fully maintained, fully independent suspension, very torquey and economical engine, extra high riding height and four wheel drive for getting onto the beach, extra low gear for getting off the beach. They are very customisable and no two are the same. The Japanese MOT is very tough and to pass after 10 years or so would cost more than the vehicle is worth which is why they have started to arrive over here. They cost roughly equivalent to VW Type 1/2 but they are more than competitive on build, maintenance, the space I can park in (seriously tight spaces because I climb out the back), spec and everything else. I bought it because I want to get onto the beach, not get stranded a mile away because the lanes are too narrow or afraid I’ll get beached (sorry for the pun).

The true judges on this are the guys with the VWs who have ALL admired my Sambars and aren’t so prejudiced. I’d recommend you buy one Chris*B, and if you want advice on what to look for then just ask.

My mum used to tell me that it’s about what you do with it. Which makes me think that the people who spouted such rubbish on this thread don’t have one (a VW or a dick).

Oh, and the Rascal is a Bedford/ Vauxhall/ Opel badged Suzuki Supercarry because those Germans know a thing about cars.

Samba.

LOL - the Type 1 is a BEETLE, not a van/bus.

I have no idea why the Type 2 (bus) was taken up by the hippies - especially given it's origins as the delivery van built for the Wolfsburg factory during it's WW2 days under the directorship of the Nazi party.

I have owned both a Bay and a Splitty and the reality of both is quite a way off the initial charm of ownership. My T4 is a million miles better in every respect and I would say a damn sight safer than all of them (yes - including your little Noddy van) in the event of a head on collision.

But - as they say, each to their own and all that, but that van is so wrong in just about any conceivable way.

If you wanted a TYPE 2, then you should have bought one.

Buying a dinky toy jap import painted to look like a 50 year old VW just doesn't begin to cut it - sorry..........

if you want to look like youve got a type 2 then buy one.

if you want a van that does the same job for half the price buy one of those instead. the only reason to buy one of those sambar things is to fit in with the cool image of surfing.

I've seen two of these recently! Though they were very cool! Would not own one but can see the attraction definatley different and a headturner....without a doubt turns more heard than most of the splitscreens around here! Agree with the comment about it should have a proper 2.0 flat four
