skimboarding

Postby freaky_welsh_chick » Wed Aug 04, 2004 9:45 pm

well i went to pembrokeshire for a week, and seeing the forecast not being very promising, i bought myself a skimboard for £15. nobody ever told me how hard it was!!! 1st time i tried i feel straigh on my arse and within 5 minutes i twisted my foot pulling all my tendons (at first i thought i'd broken it!) anyone else found skimboarding pretty tricky? after my foot got a bit better i managed to get a few short rides like, but i still look a fool trying, hehe.

Hey, I have been skimmin for 6 years, way before I started surfing. You really should be carefull, my dad broke his hip trying it. What I find fun is find a slope, thrown the board not to hard, run hard and jump hard with both feet in forward motion, then glide down the slope and into a wave a good 6 feet of air is about right if you do it right, also, when you fall, your in deep water so its alot better. Beware though, I just broke my board like that, I had a meyer (ish costed me 100) foamy, and it snapped when I did that. I guess thats good if your starting out because its alot of fun and if you make it all the way down the fall shouldnt hurt as bad.

I had a similar experience recently, it is way harder than it looks!
Make sure you time it right or the board sticks and you don't.....
I found keeping my balance low and knees bent and weight slightly foward of centre is best, kinda like snowboarding. There are some good site on the web w/ some amazing picks, those guys are nuts.

Good look and hope your ankles €o er.

Ozzie.

Well, you can skim anyway you would like. Personly I like going to the right and sloping down to the wave, but when tyour just starting I recomend going to the sea. Its shorter, but less painfull if you fall. When I unpack my camera I could sne dyou some pics of how I do it (I also gotta get a new board) But about surfing and skimmin, I find sklimming alot easier, but then again, I just started surfing.

basicly the same as sufing. you shift your weight and ajust your feet. And its so much more fun with a swallow tail, if you bought a woody, and have any varnish you should cut out it out a ways and finish it again. It makes it much more loose, and if your allready used to surfing it makes an easier transiton from surfing to skimmin. Make sure to keep some weight foward, but not too much. Thats preaty much it, and when you get the hang of it try skimmin out twards waves then doing snaps and stuff on waves commin in, it gets preaty fun.

i was just watching a surf video recently "the experiance" by Oneill they had some footy of skimboarders on there and they were riding waves just like surfers do, it took me a minute to realize that they were skimboarding and not surfing.
