Protection or Not!!!

Postby Johno » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:54 am

At last got myself a new skate board at the weekend went my local skate park, and after geting cocky droping in on the ramps i made a mistake fell off and hit the deck hard. got a cut on my hand and a big fat cut / bruse on me ass sor elbow & nee.

Does any one wear nee elbow & wrist guards or is this badly uncool was going to buy some when i was in the shop but decided against it???

Hopw can i make my board roll better? av got Frackture wheels & Abec 5 bearings, if i went for bearings for £30 would that speed the board up and is that each or for 8??

Bones China Reds! The only way to go for bearings! They'll help you from going face first into the bottom!

From my experience years ago skate boarding you get what you pay for when you buy your bearings and your trucks. Spend the money, it's worth it.

runcorns ace! set of 8 yes. i use scabs kneepads, which are quite pricy but worth it.i belive tsg's are cheaper and good.once again, ring big woodys and ask them...support skater owned shops!
btw we went to frodsham in the afternoon,it was still frosty, but that mini looked pretty good.ill let you know when im up that way again...could be sunday

I Went for a skate the other night, for the first time in about 4 years. I felt like such an old man..couldn't do anything!

I think 30 quid is a bit steep for bearings, I know you can get those Powell Swiss etc ones, but I've never really seen the need. I think the most i've ever paid was paid was 20, for a set of Black Panthers....and that was a few years ago. To be honest a brand new set of any of them should be ok....just carry a couple of spares.

If your wheels aren't spinning freely, or it seems sluggish when you push, make sure your using a washer on the axel and that the nut isn't too tight. You could also try some stuff called Speed Cream, by Bones, never used it myself though.

...Oh and if someone tries charging you £30 per bearing, headbutt them!

Wait!!

I have a set of Bones Reds. They are fine. BUT. I 3 sets of Pleasure Tool ABEC 7s which are awesome. So much smoother and faster. Haven't needed to clean them yet, and my Reds have locked up a couple times. I race so bearings are vital.

And Pleasure tools are only 10 bucks!!!

Go for bones swiss, or SS6 (Super swiss six ball, bearings with 6 balls instead of 7, less friction and revolutions, best money can buy, other than bones swiss ceramic bearings, but who has $100 to spend on bearings?)
Don't wear pads, just maby wear an helmet (only if the skatepark requires it.) Just wear jeens, pads won't help much, only for scrapes, and you just have to live with scrapes, pads only hold you back and restricts your movement. (But you sould wear kneepads on vert, so that you can kneeslide, unless you want to fall your @$$ off or grind your knees to a pulp. Plus if you are 40 pads are not going to help either, it doesn't help with broken bones, just scrapes.)

i dont agree with that.i would DEFINATLLY go for wrist guards and elbows and a lid if your starting, some would say its pointless wearing knee pads on a mini ramp cos you cant slide out.but they may give you some confidence and thats a good thing :D you might look like robocop for a bit,but you can always lose some stuff when you get confident, and you can use that stuff when you go to the bigger places.

My wrists click when I rotate them from the amount of times i've fallen off...if you've got wrist guards, you may as well wear them.

Ok, i dont skateboard, but i have had mates that got gravel rash from crashing their motorbikes, not the best feeling having a Doctor picking out stones etc from under the skin, hence why i always wear protection on the bike, and also a back protector too !
