They used to when i was a kid, got a clip round the lug hole once. The problem here is that the police have had there powers taken away.
It must be very fustrating being a copper, chasing local yobs for weeks on end then when you get them to court the jugde gives them a £50 fine and sends them on there way, or they get a free holiday on us ( tax payers). Because they are hard done by
Show respect to your elders even if they are wrong. Where have the morals and scrouples gone.

i don't think they should be allowed to throw kids around. telling them off etc is fine but all they were doing is skating (even though they're not supposed to by there) it's not like they are stealing cars and shooting people etc

in the states you will find a variety of cops. he looked to be a campus style police but real police none the less.

some cops have specific areas they patrol.

and ya.. what he did was wrong and he will probably be fired.

i don't know if he should get fired mind, everyone gets frustrated...maybe give him another chance. but the only time i think they should physically handle people is when that person is resisting arrest or something

Wonder what the kid did to piss him off so bad? Reminds me of the Rodney King video... You never saw Rod speeding through residential neighborhoods at 90 mph, evading police, being disrespectful, you only saw him getting his butt kicked, so of course the cops were the bad guys.

That's the problem with vid's like this. You only see what the photog wanted you to see.

I hate the fact that he is "suspended with pay." Wow.. so he got a paid vacation while this is under investigation. wtf.. how about suspended, no pay, probable dismissal from any policing position? People like this guy dont deserve to have any power of people.. whether the kid was back-talking or whatever prior to this clip, that was just ridiculously over the top.

Personally, if a cop tells me to do something, I am going to do it. I'm not going to mouth off and back talk him, because he doesn't have to take it. Best thing is don't mess with them. Anybody know Baltimore? Bet there are hundreds of NO SKATEBOARDING signs in that park... Who knows? Maybe the kid knocked down some little old lady just prior to the film rolling. Don't judge the cop because the kid was a little punk. I can't imagine the cop just went off for no reason.

I'm not defending what he did, I just think that we don't know what happened so how can you make an informed decision?

If what he did was "over the top" I don't imagine he'll be employed as a police officer for long.

Yeah.. Idk, suppose I just jump on bad attitude cops quickly. I grew up skating.. and I know there are cops that show up and jump straight into yelling. We've had them before..

Tough to get past it.

I feel your pain... been there myself. But we truly don't know what happened to piss the cop off. If I was one of the cops chasing Rodney King, I'd probably have beaten the crap out of him as well, just because the self centered little xxxxx could have killed someone innocent.

today i was on the freeway, one of them popos clocked me going like 57 in a 55 zone. i saw him get on his bike and start to come after me as i got of on an off ramp, he was a couple cars behind, and he caught the red and i lost him. most satisfying moment this month.

did you watch the video? it was pretty obvious to me the kid did nothing that extreme, and the head strung cop was abusing his power.

i see what you're saying but seriously.. to choke hold a 14yr old kid for back talking???

i can imagine he went off for no reason.. a few years ago my buddy got arrested for driving to find his girlfriend who called him saying she had to pull over cause she felt really sick.. he rolled up behind her where she was parked got out and a cop rolled up... ok fine.. hes making sure everything is all right.. then without question he throws my buddy into the hood of the cop car and asks him what hes doing there and he explained that his girl called him cause she was sick and had to pull over.. the cop then said i don't believe you and handcuffed him and made him sit on the hood of the cop car.. he went and talked to my buddies girlfriend and he comes back calling my friend a piece of xxxxx (keep in mind i am in the passenger seat) and the cop continues to yell at my friend for being a liar when my buddies girlfriend then gets out of the car and starts yelling at him telling him to leave and the cop tells her to shut up and not to get involved... long story short.. he got suspended for 3 months with PAY after he wrongfully arrested my friend.. he literally had no reason.. and my buddy was VERY polite cause he knew back talking wouldn't get him anywhere. and if you were there you'd understand the scenario better.. the cop was acting very mean.. and when I say mean... i am talking an evil to him.

my point is.. not every cop is a good guy.. i believe 99% are but not all

i live in the bum capital of san diego (just about) im always glad to see the cops doing their rounds and for the most part its all good but one or two of them seem to make it their mission just to hassle people for no damn reason.

I reserve judjement as its always incorrent to take something out of context without knowing the full story.

I just got around to watching that video and was pretty disgusted with what I saw. Maybe he had a bad day, and was full of frustration, the kids should not have been skating in a no skating zone, just like i shouldnt be driving at 35mph in a 30 zone (which I NEVER do! that would be wrong) but does that mean I could be 'beaten the xxxxx out of'? I hope not! If I was man handled like that boy then I dont think I would have bahaved as well as he did - all credit to the kid, though did he know the filming was happening?
From the vid the kid didnt pose an immediate threat but was manhandled anyway which is wrong. I work with the police in my job and usually they are helpful and want build good relationship with young people and build a relationship based on mutual respect, sometimes there is no respect or understanding on either side which is infurriating. That kind of behaviour just makes young people hate authority in that form and assume that all police are megalomaniacs (like boarder dave eluded to - its tough to get passed it). If it was a clip of a cop with another minority group then I think more people would find it more abhorrent but cos its a kid its not so bad.....just a bit out of order so there wont be any unrest in the local society - they are just 'punks' after all. Like isaluteyou said, I havent seen the whole turn of events, but im rubbish at refraining my comments.......ooooh there's a whole rant building up inside me but this post is already longer than I intended.

Greg - I hope your ankle gets better :)

p.s. (cos I cant help myself) I was caught speeding by the police, I got myself caught inside an overtaking zone which was quickly running out. I put my foot down to get out of the situation and get passed the car. My driving looked dangerous, I accepted that but stood by my reason for doing it, I overtook in small area and got caught out, in order to get out of the situation I put my foot down (if both cars put on the breaks and hesitate it becomes more dangerous - that was my thinking anyway). I was pulled over, the police officer seemed to enjoy giving me a good telling off, on some points I disagreed with him and was vocal about - essentially I "backchatted" him - I prefer the term "opening a dialogue". :D Did he grab me round the neck? no! cos he didnt need to, just like the guy didnt need to in that vid to that kid.

All I'm trying to say is don't hang the cop because that video probably doesn't tell the whole story. Wait until you get all the facts before you pillage the guy. I don't like the looks of what I see, but I'm not about to accept that a 14 year old probably punk ass kid didn't have it coming, maybe he deserved more...

Just read the accompanying article...

<"Police officers have a hard job. in this particular video, you don't see what happened before the officer took the boy down to the ground," Henry Belsky said. "Until you see the totality of what happened, one really does not know what reappy happened down there."

Hundreds of WJZ viewers have e-mailed their opinions about the incident. Two-thirds feel the officer was too harsh with the boy.>

That's how Rodney King got awarded millions of dollars. Why doesn't the City of Baltimore just pay the kid off with millions, two wrongs make a right in today's politically correct world, might be the best thing to do.

I'm no friend of cops, but I'm more against injustice, and if the cop is being wrongfully accused, I would stand up for him.
