I guess its rather frustrating when I show up to my fire fighter class, and you see all these guys wearing o'neil, billabong, volcom, quicksilver, rip curl and every other big surf company t shirt known to man.

I understand its great for the companies selling the shirts.. but damn its so annoying to see guys who have never touched their toe's in my cold ocean.. or even been on a surfboard in their lives.. yet wear all this xxxxx.

bit of a rant.. but do you guys have these guys who are just trendy and wear surf brand clothing because they think its cool or something??

^^to me if you surf.. then cool.. you have foot in the sport..

its the samething as people who don't watch/play a sport yet wear the hat.. here in the states.. EVERYONE wears a baseball hat yet cannot name one player on a baseball team lol.

i think you need to lighten up a bit mate lifes easy,dont take everthin to serious they probably feel good wearin that stuff,,so what,,if it makes you happy..

i'm quite sure there will be some personal belonging of yours that replicates the same theory.

it does make me laugh but it just shows how cool people think surfers are... everyone wants to be one. Well everyone wants people to think they're one so same thing lol. You should be proud

oh I'm not bothered by it in that way. I am just looking at these guys confused as to who they think they are? I am sure its just because they think its a cool style which is fine.. its just funny how MORE and MORE people wear surf stuff today yet have never surfed in their life.

but ya it is just a piece of shredded cotton designed to provide warmth with a logo on it so I shouldn't laugh too hard.

I dont get the issue. I didnt surf when I was 13 but was very jelous of my friend who had the 'Quicksilver oh so cosy fleece' that I wanted but couldnt afford. I didn't want it so that I would 'look like a surfer' (or so that the surfer guy with the locker next to me at school would take notice ), I wanted it cos it looked really nice and warm.

I wear skate shoes now - I havent been on a skateboard since I was about 6 and used to ride it kneeling down pushing myself along with my hands - occaisionally running over my thumbs. Is it OK to wear skate shoes as I used to play on my brothers board when I was a kid? I thought it was OK to wear them just because I liked them If not I cant wear running shoes as Im not a runner. Do I have to walk around in my winter boots now? - I dont get to surf much so dont think I would 'qualify' for that either.

I dont think that people walk into their local Billabong shop to buy clothes so that people will think they are surfers, its just cos the clothes are nice (and are marketed well).
Except for the rash vest thing - thats just inexcusable.

Maybe they do and it's just me who has never bought into the whole 'define myself by what I wear' thing.

definately with Sar on this one. you wear clothes because you like them i mean, i like and wear a pair of Duffs but i havent skateboard for god knows how long.....i wear them coz they're comfy

yeah the rash vest thing i really don't get i was coming back from holiday on sunday, and saw some guy walking out of arrivals (in Gatwick) with a bloody rash vest on.....WTF thats just plain stupid....

^^I guess I am coming off wrong.
I am just finding it funny that people base their entire style on something they don't care about.. Not saying they can't/shouldn't do it.. I mean I wore billabong stuff when I didn't surf.. and its certainly good for business to have non-surfers and surfers alike wearing surf brand clothing..

But some of these guys base their entire wardrobe on this style..

Its not so much just surfing stuff.. its everything.. not to say all people who wear surf brand stuff are trying to be surfer.. but its almost like a lot of them.. not all.. are exploiting a genre for the sake of style. But I guess that is the world today.

Its funny seeings a guy who has never touched a surfboard walk around in boardshorts, billabong shirt, and flip flops...
What kinda set me off last night was when I was talking to a guy in my class who filled that description and even had a massive Rip Curl sticker on the back window of his massively lifted chevy truck. and when talking to him I assumed he surfed.. and he said hes never surfed and didn't really want to because he thought it was kinda boring..

that is the kinda guy I am laughing at.. some guys will buy a shirt just because they think its a cool looking shirt and don't care if its a surf/snow/skate or even rollerskating shirt.. they just like the look.. thats fine.. but this guy in my class really made me wanna start laughing because its kinda sad to try so hard to fill your look up with this genre just to not care for what its all about... yet they still walk around like a massive surf company advertisement.

I have no problem with "i wear it cause I like it.." but these guys who wear it just because of the "style" and its whats "in" makes me feel bad for em.

I wear clothes, trainers, jeans whatever because i like how they look and i feel comfortable in them. And i do have a tendancy to like ripcurl, fat face, those kind of clothes. I liked them before i surfed, sailed whatever. But even now when i go into these shops i always kinda feel as though something more is expected of me, as though im not 'cool' enough. which is true to be fair, im the least cool person ever. i just hate it when people assume because you wear ripcurl, for example, you are either 'cool' or just trying to be 'cool' and failing miserably. i just hate stereotypes!

Ok guys, just a thought, but if you stopped a random selection of 50 fat bloke in london wearing surf gear and asked them who "quicksilver" WAS, how many of them do you think would know it was anything to do with surfing? I reckon at least three quarters would say something like, "dunno? just another trendy fashion label?"
