hi,

i'm in irvine and i need some info on the beaches in huntington. i think some people here are locals from around there and im kinda confused about the surf blackballin during the summer and could use some help. Is the blackballin for the state beaches all day or certain times of the day? and when does it open back up for surfers? also are there any specific spots that are prime or is it pretty much any area along the state beaches? 1 more question, has anybody been to dogbeach in hb and hows the surf there? as my girlfriend wants to take her dog for walks while i surf and i figured dogbeach sounds like a perfect place. k any info would help, thanks in advance.

North of the pier is typically open all the time without blackball.

They blackball during the crowded parts of the day. They put up a yellow square with a black circle painted on it on top of the life guard house. I forget which it is, state or city beach... one blackballs, the other doesn't. Hence north of the pier is typically always open to surfers.

The dog beach does have surf, and there is surf all the way up into the state park. There are also some surfing dogs at the dog beach.

Just what I said - there are dogs that go surfing with and without their owners.. riding on longboards, usually.

There are two basic beach areas, at least when it comes to parking and fees. There is the state beach, which is south/east of beach blvd, and the city beach is north/west of beach blvd. The city beach encompasses both sides of the pier, the dog beach is a bit to the north of the pier, past sixth street (iirc). For the city beach you can purchase a yearly parking pass, daily passes range from $10-20 for city lots (higher during special events). I think the price for the state beach is $10-12 daily, I think. I bought the city parking pass, so don't visit the state beach that much.

I'm truly not sure about wannasurf.com, but other folks are talking about it and for SoCal it's not terribly inaccurate. Sorry to hear it gives folks on the east coast heartburn...

I know most of the surfing beaches in my neck of the woods from experience.

The city also has surf info--water temp, air temp, surf height, and quality on their website, as well as a couple of live webcams that you can move around to look at both north and south sides of the pier.

I usually go to the cliffs, which includes a part of dogbeach and I'd say it's a pretty good spot to go. You have to pay for parking so it isn't as crowded when compared to areas closer to the pier. Also the break is pretty consistent so it's a good place to learn.

funny, i gotta check out those dogs surfing at dogsbeach my gf would love that. yea i ask about the state beaches specially cause i got the state beach parking permit and been looking for state beaches with consistent surf in the area. wannasurf ha sbeen helpful i look at that and a few others as much as i can for surf spots and forecasts.
