I would have to say Endless Summer. It sparked the idea of surf exploration and really defined what surf movies could be.

some movies I watched and enjoyed include riding GIANTS, the ride he day, Highwater, Water Man, Laird, Endless Summer, Five Summer stories, Step into Liquid and sort of a surf movie Soul Surfer. Favorite....not sure
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I just watched Five Summer Stories, Innermost limits of pure fun and Morning of the earth. They are all done around the beginning of the shortboard era. In the second one (Innermost limits of pure fun) they start off with short long boards then move to gunnish looking boards and even some extremely short longboard looking boards (wide and round nose but very short). Five Summer stories is still a good flick, the other two are interesting only as they document the beginning of the shortboard era and the first footage taken from a board in the tube. George Greenough, the guy lots of people used to think I was ,was invovled in all these films and he mounted a camera on his back then kneeboarded and got film from inside a tube that way, decades before gopros showed up.

If you liked the innermost limits of pure fun, have a look at Crystal Voyager by Greenough. :D

An interesting video to check to see how Aussie surfers evolved see if you can get Bombora by Nick Carroll .

Going Vertical another arguing over who started the short board revolution.

I notice OMS you don't say much about Morning of The Earth. Many generations of Aussie surfers were turned on by it!

Looking at those films makes me realize if someone filmed me surfing I could have made a better surf film than that LOL I think the old boards were just inferior to what we had just a little after that and way inferior to what we have now. Morning of the earth was the last of three which I watched one a night and while I enjoyed looking at the old boards and surfers it didn't seem to present anything too exciting compared to the others. By far Five Summer Stories was the best, though I could watch another surf film tonight. I am going to watch Missing sometime soon

Five summer stories had Barry Kanaiaupuni who was my inspiration.... the surfer I most wanted to be like when I was learning. It also has Gerry Lopez and Ben Aipa and Jeff Hackman and Larry Bertleman and other surfers who gave me inspiration when I was learning.

So I watched Super Sessions which is pretty good. It's from the 70's and besides noticing the use of fin boxes I realized the female pro surfers used bikinis which totally showed their butt cleavage as opposed to todays surf bikinis which usually at the very least hides the cleavage but may show nearly everything else.

I just watched Endless Summer 2 and I much prefer it to Endless Summer 1 due to better surfing.

With all of the old Endless Summers 1 and 2 and then Step into Liquid, the surfing was top of the line for the day!
It just looks antiquated , I sometimes feel I surf better than they did then but that is now, with the new equipment, and new maneuvers on the wave, could I do them on the old boards , no way!
I was an average surfer then , I'm an older more average surfer now :!:

Personally I enjoy someone making full use of the wave face and length more than a spectacular one hit aerial move!

I watched Riding Giants again. It's a pretty decent account of the better known big wave riders that were the top of the sport a while back. I think the new wave of big wave riders will go on to define the sport more although Laird is still in there on the top.

I just watched Missing. I liked it, great surfing and waves. Interesting other stuff like a surfer having a midlife crisis.

Following this thread, I've watched endless summers 1 and 2, North shore and Riding Giants. I didn't like Morning of the earth, infact I fell asleep as it was just a music video.

Apart from North shore, these movies are all like documentaries and I really enjoy learning the history of surfing. Are there any more movies like this?

Educate yourself BaNZ, the entire Bruce Brown set leading to Endless Summer 1 and 2 then Step into Liquid. They are Slippery when Wet, Barefoot Adventure, Surfing Hollow Days,Waterlogged.
There are Jack McCoy videos, North Shore is just plain hokey!
For a review of the advent of short board surfing try Busting down the Door and Going Vertical.
Taylor Steel movies are pretty good and explore Indian ocean islands with people like Kelly Slater
Slipping Jet Streams, Castles in the Sky and Broke Down Melody.

Morning of the Earth was very much a response in counter culture to all the young surfers in Australia
who were either being conscripted to fight in Vietnam or dropping out to a hippy counter culture lifestyle.
Same era if you want to consider Big Wednesday ( semi hokey) which was iconic of the shift in attitudes of the time.
A good one about surf culture or lack of it would be Nick Carroll's Bombora ( which maybe hard to get outside Australia)
Similarly I would recommend One California Day and the raft of videos with the Malloy Brothers,.
If you didn't like morning of the earth don't bother with Spirit of Akasha as it is a tribute to MOTE.
All in the Eye of the beholder really

Sounds a bit kinky!

I watched the first 10 minutes of Morning of the Earth. Without knowing the history / background of the movie, it just feels like putting on MTV and falling asleep on your couch.

Just finished Step into the liquid and I enjoyed it. But not as much as the others. I think I prefer the pre shortboard era as I surf a longboard so I can relate to it more. I just like it more than watching shortboarders shred.

Will look forward into getting those videos! :) Thanks for the suggestions.
