Thank you, Salty. We faced evacuation twice. In the early days we were without electricity. It's been quite an education for my precious 15 year old niece that lives with us. The Santa Barbara school system cancelled 7 days of classes immediately before Christmas holiday. Gosh, I remember praying for snow days in NY state. A snow day is a lot less lethal than these fires. The air quality here is horrendous; as you may have heard.

The really fine news for the school kids is they probably will not have to make these lost days up. Heck, I remember when we exceeded our allowance of snow days east of the mighty Mississippi River, we had to make the days up. The most terrible aspect of this is that in some years it was on a Saturday!! Talk about blasphemy!!

P.S. I hope you've been surfing. I heard it's been good lately in your neck of the woods. Hmmm... shouldn't that be in your neck of the shore breaks?

Tonight is the final big test for us in Santa Barbara County. Firefighters went for broke beginning Sunday morning to gain control before tonight's forecasted Sundowner winds. These firefighters work 24 hours on and 24 hours off. They are as tough as they come. I think they will win.

The last time I checked, the firefighting price tag was in excess of $137,000.000! The quantity of resources on this fire is staggering. Not many nations could muster this quantity, especially this quickly and with 9 other major wildfires simultaneously burning within 300 miles.

Total Fire Personnel: 8,529
Total Fire Engines: 972
Total Fire crews: 166
Total Helicopters: 34
Total Dozers: 77
Total Water Tenders (tanker trucks) : 94
Total Airplanes: 2 to 40 depending on the fight, weather, and ash

What is amazing this is happening as you head into winter.

The Australian Summer bushfire season is just beginning, wonder how that will go down?
Keep breathing the best air you can Billy!

When my mother came out to Australia one Christmas. We had in one week a tornado, another day 4" of Golfball hail then I was trapped in Sydney for 8 days as bushfires raged between home and the city. Our house was under evacuation orders but it didn't prove necessary, fortunately.
A couple of years before we felt the Newcastle earthquake wrench the house!

All seems to be okay now. The firefighters prepared well for the Sundowner winds. They kept the fire from advncing. As of tonight, the fire is 65% contained. Air quality is markedly improved. Now, cleanup begins.

We are all doing rain dances for you and California and singing that Mamas and Papas song, " man it pours"

Stay out off the arroyos, jumping jack flash flood is coming.
Australians always put out bushfires with floods.

BoMan, it came close enough. One -third of city of Santa Barbara was evacuated. Fortunately, city did not burn.

Re: SoCAL is on fire! (Again) -- Extinguished!

Postby billie_morini » Sat Jun 02, 2018 11:52 pm

billie morini's Believe It or Not!
The US Forest Service reported on 1 JUN 2018 that the Thomas Fire was completely extinguished. This is the fire that began on 4 DEC 2017 near Ventura, CA, and raced all the way north beyond Santa Barbara, CA. More than 440 square miles burned. It is astounding this fire burned for 6 months. This is the case even though the fire was reported contained by 12 JAN 2018. To the surprise and appreciation of many nature lovers in this region, the US Forest Service opened the forest to the public on 24 MAY 2018.

A brief news article reporting the fire is officially out can be found at this link:

If not seen in another forum post, one our forum members, PunaTuna, is in jeopardy on the Big Island. As of two days ago, the lava from the Kilauea volcano eruption began to seriously threaten his home. Kilauea began erupting this year on 3 MAY. PunaTuna will benefit from positive thoughts and prayers directed his way. The photo showing lava behind PunaTuna's home is in this forum thread:
