I lived in Perth for four years, and I think Aussies are COOL! I live in SoCal now, and it's a shame I've inherited a minor annoyance to American accent... lolz

Having played most of the above I'm not sure how anyone can compare them as they are completely different sports with different goals.

I haven't played Aussie rules 'properly' as in for a team but I know the rules and have played with a bunch of mates and it was great fun.

I've played rugby which is also cool but very different.

I have obviously played soccer, being from the UK

and I played American Football for my Uni. I was also asked to play for the Welsh national team (yeah there is one believe it or not!!)

I have to say that Soccer is the only one that should really be called FOOTBALL as it's the only one you play entirely with your FEET!!

Aussie rules is very physical and you have to be a great athlete to play well - there is a lot of skill involved.

Soccer is incredibly skillful (which is why I'm so bad at it!) I wouldn't describe it as dangerous but some of the stuff that pros can do absolutely amazes me. Much as I hate to admit it, the way David Beckham can curve a ball to put it exactly where he wants it astounds me!

Rugby is an interesting one - it was invented by William Web Ellis, who picked up the ball during a game of soccer and ran and put it in the opposition goal. This must mean that Rugby School was rubbish at soccer, because if I'd done that at my school I would have got a detention, not invented a new sport!!

American football may look like a bunch of fat blokes in girly pads smashing into each other, but the stop-start nature of the game means that it it one of the most tactically complicated games I have played. The difference is that every inch a guy moves the ball forward in AF is important so whereas in other sports you bring the guy to the ground. In AF you HAVE to stop the guy dead and if possibly push him back before he hits the ground. The pads were introduced because so many people died from head injuries!

So basically they're all different and shouldn't be compared to each other because almost every aspect of the game is completely different!

Also I think you'll find the first recorded game where people kicked a ball around to get it into a goal is in 200 BC in China - so I don't know about England having 'invented' it! Maybe they invented the 11 a side game we know as soccer now, but the kicking ball concept is not one of ours I'm afraid!

soccer is by far THE GAYEST sport on earth. A bunch of men (sometimes women which is better) running around in shortie shorts kicking a friggin ball and claiming it to be the worlds most dangerous sport.HAHAHAHAHA

Good point by the penguin guy, because In aussie rules, rugby, and american footy it's got lots of hands.

And rugby.. wtf? It should be called handball, even though there is a game called handball. Kicking in rugby.. theres not that much of it, but you gotta be skilled 2 play it.

Hey - didn´t the english invent rugby and then all you aussies and americans stole it, changed it around a bit and called it football??

The English did invent Rugby.

A per my other mail it was invented by a guy called William Web Ellis at Rugby School (just down the road from me actually!!)

He picked up the ball in a game of soccer and ran with it, putting it in the opposition goal. And thus 'Rugby Football' as it's really called was invented.

I'm not sure if American and Aussie rules football are adaptations of rugby, cos they're really VERY different.

We are so glad that we found this site- we have been looking for people who love surfing, and who have moved to Oz . My husband is a longboarder , and I tag along , ( i haven't been on a board in ...oh... 12 years ?? BUT - I still have the draw to it ! ), taking pics for my website and to sale on our site .
