Do you have a design of the Hawaiian tattoo? I'm looking for tattoos that are symbols of protection like that.

Libby wrote:Hey just curious cos i have just booked my second tattoo. I have a swirly sun thing at the top of my back, its black and a very simple design but quite big. I love it! Have just booked to have a tiny little tattoo on the inside of my wrist, this ones just for me and will be covered by bracelets most of the time. Its gonna be a tiny little orca whale cos ive always been obsessed with them and im hoping to work studying whales as a career. What do you guys think of them generally, did yours hurt when you had them done? mine did!

Any of the younger ones planning them for when their a bit older?

Just nosy, dont mind me!

Tats suck.

Back in the 60's, during "the war" I thought about tattoos --

Anything I would have chosen at 20 would suck today at 57.

Pick a bumper sticker you want on your rig for the next ten years. Your rig you don't have to live with, and in ten years you'll have a new one.

I have the same body at 57 as I did at 9, or earlier.

I figure another 20 -- 30 yrs on it. So far nothing I see in "scratch" is gonna be "neat" when I'm 90.

Well i've got one on my back and i love it, yes i am only 20 but its something i've always wanted and i'm really glad i got it done and didnt bottle it. I havent had that second one yet as i dont want to end up covered in them. Maybe one more eventually but i'm not in any rush. Like i said its personal opinion, i strongly believe that in 20 years i will still love it but theres no gaurantees with anything in life eh?

OK, blow me off as an "old fart" who doesn't know squat --

There are several, numerous actually, sociological/historical works on tattoos. Most of them look at tattoos in the "Western European" tradition, like Europe and the USA -- Non tribal types.

Tribal tattoos are a whole different genre. You're not going to do a "tribal" tattoo any more than you're going to live in a palm frond hut and eat squashed roots and dead birds taken with a blow-dart tube.

I read up on this stuff, because I find it fascinating.

You should at least understand the distinction between the "tribal" scratch and the "folkloric" stuff. You should understand about placement and how the "shoulder patches" in military uniforms influenced placement of folkloric designs on the upper arms, forearms, wrists, chest, etc.

New technology is bringing new inks into the tattoo business. Polymers which are color stable and don't fade. But if you look at old tattoos, what you see is faded colors and edges that have "blurred" as the skin grows and changes.

What was once a sharp image with bold colors becomes a blur of faded ink.

Six weeks out of the water. That's the other thing to think about --

That and when you're 18 and have the rose-bud tat on the breast, at 80 you're going to have a long-stemmed rose, and a faded one at that.

Gettin' old sucks. Getting old with old tattoos really sucks.

Every tattoo book I've ever read, and I've read a heap of them, talks about "post-tat remorse." Never talked to anyone who had a tattoo who didn't regret it in some sense, someplace.

Employers won't hire you if it shows. Lot's of employers, facists that they are, will require you to cover it with clothes or a bandage, etc.

Same thing for piercings.

Oh yeah . . . BTW . . .

If you ever get arrested, for the most minor crap, like peeing on the beach . . . The constable takes you in and does the mug-shot, fingerprint thing. THEN . . . Then they note "tattoos, scars, and marks."

Tattoos are marks that the police use to ID criminals. Also, most criminals have tattoos.

So is that the tribal group you want to be a part of?

I'm not brushing you off at all. I here what you are saying, hence why I said only time will tell and that i DOUBT i will regret it but you never know. I thought it through logically at the time (hence why its on my back - easy to keep covered up for work etc)and seriously thought it through if i regret it i'll live with it, it was my decision. Maybe i'll be on this website in 30 years time saying i regret it, i'm not saying your wrong, just saying its not the same for everybody 8)
