Don't bother. Get on a cheap flight to Christchurch in NZ, 400 bucks return, hop on a snow bus at the airport, an hour later you'll be in the Craigieburn range, scoring much more snow for much less money.

Yeah? I have some family in north island NZ, so taranaki etc is not too hard for me. South island sounds very good, I guess it needs a little more infrastructure (like most of NZ!!) to make it really take off, but having said that, all that fresh powder going spare.. who needs crowds :) How much is it to heli-ski (or board in my case)?

Thredbo is about 6hrs drive from sydney so that makes it attractive, but i have heard it's a bit manic on a weekend. What's expensive? Passes, accomodation, everything?! LOL. Apparently my siter's husbands bro-in-law (who i know quite well) has just bought a chalet there, so that might make things easier, so i'd better be nice to him.. :)

either way i intend to make the most of arriving down under in winter! 2 winters in a row though.. don't need that!

There isn't any infrastructure on the ski fields near Christchurch  Rope tows and driving up the mountain are the only way to do it, but the terrain and powder is sick. It's like the difference between surfing good uncrowded waves, and going to Newquay for a weekend

There's a new heli ski operation starting this winter - Heli Park at Mt Potts - google it. One of my mates skied Potts out of a heli last year, said it was so epic he didn't speak for a week after!

Looks good actually, minimum charge of 270 kiwi to fly you in and give you a couple of runs, then $90 a trip up after that. So under 500 kiwi for a day, not too bad considering what you get, and around there is proper back country, nobody for miles around. It would be awesome on the right day. I am gonna take my wife up there for a couple of days this coming winter to check it out.

Re the Thredbo thing, I work with a few guys based in Sydney, and they fly over to NZ to ski for a weekend in preference to Thredbo. They reckon it's rubbish most of the time.

I really shouldn't live in America.

Dead serious next summer I'm gonna try as hard as I can to get a job in NZ.

My new snowboard is in Honolulu, should be with me by Friday.

I bought a 164 Arbor Abacus. Just need to wait three months for some nice powder to play in. So excited!

Good idea! Might have to look into pinching a snow cannon from somewhere and hooking it up to the street lights.

why was it in honolulu? who made it and what price?

tomcat- why do you need to go to NZ to snowboard. ever been to CO? or you could move to hawaii and surf. i hike if theres no surf like it has for the past 2 months.

heres some picks from saturday. its discolored because i took them with my cell phone and the panoramics readjust aperature for every shot (its stupid) theyre all from the same spot, it has a 360 view.

I was up in the Cairngorms on Thurday, my last boarding of the season I think as I'll not be able to get anymore time off work.

I've also got a bit of work to do to my board as the granite on those mountains rips through your base like butter!

I think a moderator should lock this thread before the Kiwi's take it over and make us all jealous!!

Nice pics Hawaii, like the second set the best!!

Honolulu is where fedex ship to on the way to NZ. Got it from a shop in the US - cost $320, even with the shipping it cost me less than 50% of the price of buying it from a local store.

It's an Arbor - www.arborsports.com sweet boards, might have to add an A-Frame to the quiver next year if the US $ keeps dropping like a hooker's panties.

First proper winter blast is rolling up the South Island tonight, should stick a bit of snow on the local mountains, and there's a pretty solid swell and freezing cold offshore winds for the weekend. :D

awesome
pics in here

last time I was skiing was at easter (I live in austria) and it was totally awesome:

I was skiing with some friends and I have to say I that it was some of the best snow I have ever had (means a lot I am skiing/snowbaording for 17 years now)

but the best part of it was that there were nearly no ppl: season nearly finished and it seemed that ppl don't want to go skiing after easter,

so I was skiing with only one lift, though it was from like 1700-2900 m
and it was sooo awesome: there was like 20-30 cm powder even on the slopes and beside there was like 1.5 meter powder

I am now considering to make a course to be a skiin instructor, but dunno yet (a friend earned 900 bucks in only three weeks, and it's no boring work, but you are outside and meet some ppl)
it's quite expensive though (sth. like 800 euros) and it takes place exactly after university ends in summer, so there is quite some stress involved :P
but I will most likely do it - skiing is just unbelievable

I hope my post makes sence and I didn't make too many mistakes :P
