Look out for a North American to be sharing your rides soon!

Greetings from the States,

Well looks like you chaps will have a Canadian by way of America washing up on your beaches sometime next month. I am starting a new job in Newcastle and god knows I can't give up surfing so the Shores of Newcastle is going to be my local wave riding area.

I learnt to surf off the coast of Florida down by St. Augustine. Not the greatest surfing until the hurricane season hits, then they get pretty decent. I've also surfed in the Bahamas and the Outer Banks (probably the best place I have surfed on the East Coast of Florida).

Anyway, I would definitely be more than happy to go surfing with anyone in the area. I could even teach a couple of you guys or girls in exchange for a ride out to the beach since I am not going to have wheels when I first get out there.

I am not sure whether I should bring a board or two out there or if I would be better off to get one once I get out there. How much do new and used short boards go for up in Newcastle? The boards I have now are 6 feet, do most of you ride short boards or long?

Looking forward to getting out there and hearing how the waves are out there!

Cheers!

Jamie

Hey jamie,

yeah, i think the majority of guys up here have relatively long boards and definitely quite a few proper longboarders. Mine's a 6'8". Summer time the waves aren't always that big so you may find a short board not much fun.

Let me know when you're around. I go down pretty regularly and don't mind meeting up. Still quite a bit of a beginner so would be cool to learn some stuff from a more experienced pro. :P

I've got an exam in a couple of weeks so am trying to not think bout surfing til then although I'm sure I'll be in the water when there are waves if I'm not working. After my exam though it's every spare moment in the water. :)

cheers for now.

You're right, they're all a great crowd. I'm still pretty much a beginner and was pretty impressed with how open and friendly everyone was when i first went down. It's amazing how many people you just get chatting to and stuff. Guess you didn't make it down on Sunday seen as though it's been flat for the past three days.... :-(

Hello, I'm a surfer from the Philippines. Just moved recently here. Coming from a temperate climate (hell is more like it), it was a shock for me to find out that summer here is like the coldest way back home. I wonder, do i have to have balls of brass to attack those waves?

Kidding aside, can somebody tell where to score some waves and where to buy stuffs (obviously i need some wetsuits). Lastly, I would like to know if locals are receptive to the idea of an outsider crashing in somebody's homebreak.

I'm stoked.

Don't put wax on the rails - it slows the board down massively.
Just get use to gripping rails but also putting flat pressure down on the board with your hands.
Have fun!

yeah, i've noticed while watching the pros on telly and stuff how they always seem to put their hands flat on the board by the rails and apply downward pressure to stand up. I've always gripped rails and had my fingers wrapped underneath the board. Still have to get out there next time to try the flat-handed technique - as soon as the waves decide to arrive, it's been flat for a week :-(
Still think you need wax on rails though, I will still be gripping the rails to sit-up or duck dive etc and don't want to be headbutting my board if I can help it. Think it's definitely necessary.
