Struggling to Workout Regularly

Postby SurfShape » Fri Sep 30, 2016 2:15 pm

Do you ever have a problem finding the motivation to workout regularly? What are some of your go-to excuses to skip, and how do you stop yourself from skipping?

I used to always skip and was a Pro at missing workouts. From this I've come up with some simple, easy to apply tactics to give yourself the mental edge to follow through and workout consistently. You can find them in the link below. We all know surfing is infinitely better when you are in good surfing shape.

I used to surf long ago and back then I never needed to exercise to stay in shape. I was that active. I quit surfing for almost 12 years and got into really bad shape besides starting working at a really demanding job. Once I made up my mind to start surfing again, the prospect of me surfing kept me exercising for 6 months before I even bought a board and tried it. That I can still surf and I want to re-learn and improve makes me stick to it.
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

It's important to have a routine!

* I take a swim class twice a week for paddle fitness. It helps having a coach to call me out when laziness strikes.
* Weather permitting, I ride a bike instead of driving around town.
* I ride the long skateboard at least once a week to improve turning and balance.

Of course, if I lived on the coast, I'd skip it all and surf every day. :D

I know what you mean! I had to quit once for about 6 months because I was living away from the ocean. Didn't workout much during those 6 months and was so weak when I got back in the water. Worked out for a month before getting back in the water after that haha

When you're land locked, or close to it, routine and consistency are key! :surfing:

The two best ways are

- to set aside a standard time (eg a class or a lunch time) and go no matter what or how you feel. Once you start you will do something

- do something you enjoy. Or at least don't hate. There are so many options that you should be able to find something

I'm definetely the one with this problem! :? I tried to start regular workouts several times during this year and several times I lost my motivation and had pauses in this, sometimes for the long time :(
The last one and current attempt seems more successful fo me because I finally found smth which is the best for me, it's yoga :) I adore this practice because of its effectiveness both for my body and emotional state so that really helps me to keep motivation every day :) I think that in such case it's very important to find smth which is definetely yours among different sport activities :yearght:
I'm thinking about adding some more active exercises for my regular schedule, probably smth with using such machines, I think that it can be a good decision instead of gym (I can't go to it regurarly because of some reasons :? ). And of course my favourite surfing but it's always a big motivation and pleasure! :D

Especially when you are landlocked, you need a good routine.

I play football every monday, swim with my daughter (1km at least) every wednesday, run 2-3x per week for 10km and play golf every weekend with friends, even in winter. Having company or family with you helps a lot, so it actually is not that difficult in terms of moivation. Running after a long day in the office (even when it is dark an raining) is great to clear the mind.

But also everyday I try do a a few pullups, pushup and burpees, and this is something that is more work and less fun and which I struggle to keep the routine with, even if it actually does not take that much time.

Although I am out of the water due to surgery I normally make it a point to jog 1.5 miles a day with the wife, sometimes farther, just to keep up on my endurance and such. I don't do weights, for me it bulks me up and I get heavier, makes it harder to surf due to the extra weight. You might be different...

Thanks for the advice! By the way, try to peptides after a workout! Peptides are amino acids that are the building blocks of certain proteins needed by the skin, like collagen and elastin. Using a serum or moisturizer that contains peptides can lead to firmer, younger-looking skin, and maybe even fewer breakouts. They are safe to use but educated prescribing is vital. Like any medication or treatment, peptides can have risks, side effects, and contradictions. For example, some may be avoided if the patient has a history of melanoma.
Best consulted with a nutritionist! Success!

Thanks for advice to everyone!
I also skip the training norm, but my mirror and thought helps me. I usually think if I don’t do it now, I will never do it. The main thing is TO START. I tell myself that it's okay, but I'll do for 15 minutes and that's all. It tricks the brain. When you start doing smt, you get sucked in.

I also realized that teamwork is very motivating. Many people want to make a difference in their body at the gym, but can't do it alone. When you're in the company of people who have the same goals as you, it's much easier to get yourself to work. My workouts help me to be in the shape, I try to listen to my body and concentrate my attention on each and single muscle. Such immersion in action is like meditation and also allows me to get the best result out of my training session. Wish me luck!
