This is unfortunate, but actually 1 of 100's of examples. You see a similar thing with 100's to 1,000's of businesses that leave California for Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and other states. The common problems at the federal and state level are: 1) too much business taxation at present operating locale, 2) too many environmental compliance regulations, and 3) lower labor costs elsewhere. Problem 1 is the fault of government. Problem 2 is the fault of over zealous environmental protectionists. Problem 3 is the fault of government, over zealous environmental protectionists, greedy workers, and lower cost of living indices in other countries. You cannot do anything about the cost of living index in other countries.

Currently Indonesia is losing jobs to places like Bangledesh and Vietnam. Seems that labor is too expensive here....there is an emerging middle class and higher expectations of what life should be so conglomerates are off to the greener (€£¥) pastures of lower expectations and costs. The way of the the world on all levels.

Rinky; This type of situation is occurring across the entire world as market and labour costs shift manufacturing to cheaper countries!

I would like to suggest that rather than canvassing main item political subjects which we all have to address locally, why not use the chat aspect to draw attention to issues where the world wide surfing base can actually achieve something!
One such issue successful done was a threatening of a surfers' boycott to Indonesia because of bomb fishing.
In Australia an overturning of a proposed passenger liner facility on the Gold Coast.

Unfortunately labour laws and other items will not altered one bit by any surfing petition.
When I am out surfing I would rather not enter into the rights and wrongs of politics, surfing is my escape from all the all too real nasty stuff.
And on that basis I would rather the forum be there to address things that we can work for!
I've seen how we can be argumentative over the unwritten traffic rule of surfing, politics are another level again:D

Well, after I posted this I remembered that I broke one of my own rules. I should not discuss politics on the internet. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing politics in any online forum where it is permitted--most of us do live in democracies where respectful debate is supposed to be the lifeblood of our respective societies--but I know for me personally that I should just drop it or go to a political forum. I will say this, however. I have noticed that there are people who always discourage political discussion every time it comes up. What those people don't realize is that they are actually promoting a political position when they attempt to stop political debate. Their position is the equivalent of saying, "I like things the way they are and I want them to stay the same so please don't engage in political discussion because it just causes friction. I don't want to see things change anyway so if I can get everybody to stop talking, the status quo that I love, will remain."

Anyway, I'm going to drop this thread, but I will respond to the myth that American workers are greedy with this link.

The problem with political stuff is there isn't usually a clear choice to make. Many factors come about to make stuff like that happen. No one mentioned greedy companies or stupid consumers but basically the consumer controls what happens. They support the companies by buying their products or services and that is the motivation for the company to do whatever it takes to get the consumer to support them. The resources go where they are most profitable..... even if it's under the bus
So what is worse.... dying or regretting it for the rest of my life? Obviously I chose not regretting it.

I absolutely agree , there is no way political debate should stifled. Once you stop the debate, the death of individual freedom is not far behind!
To vaguely quote a First Nation Chief, one day the world will realise you can't eat money !

I'm okay either way because Rinky's first post is properly placed in the General Chat forum established to, "Chat about anything non surfing related," and because he did not ask for help with his dissertation, thesis, mid-year project, finals project, home work, survey monkey, or other survey.

Pass mark for placement and not a survey or assignment in sight.
Even the surveys are being made offshore :D

We don't have a president and we had prime minister who drowned while body surfing
thought he could surf!
The previous Prime Minister thought he could surf ( white water level only) so we dumped him politically!
Surfed about as well as he governed
