Dilemma....

I'm 24 this year, been trying to get into uni for 3 years running now on a physiotherapy course but no luck yet (they're a mission to get on to). I've got an interview in 2 weeks which is my last hope for starting in Sept.

I've decided if I don't get into Uni I will go travelling/visiting friends & fam in September for bout 7 months. Going to SA (loads of fam & friends so won't cost much), Oz (see my bro I haven't seen for bout 7 years and 2 nephews I've never met & also travel down east coast to Sydney stopping along the way), NZ & Fiji where I know no-one but will defo have a ball I'm sure. All amazing surf locations too which is part of the plan... :P

Now, the whole travel plan is REALLY appealing to me and know if I don't do it now I won't afford it after uni for quite a while & will also be needing to settle into a job before I lose all my knowledge & forget everything I've learnt etc. Uni will always be there when I get back and I could do with a break. On other hand, I've had a gruelling 3 years trying to get onto this course and haven't quite managed it yet so would be a shame to give up a place to go travelling if I get an offer from this interview. :?

What you guys reckon? Go travelling anyway and try for uni when I get back or take up an offer if I get one from this interview? Either way, I'll be going to the interview to check the place out cos if I don't get an offer then it's travel all the way!!! :D

Any advice is welcomed...

As tempting as if it to blast off and surf round the world, I've said tak the offer if you get it.

I say that because and especially if it will put you into somthign you will like as a job (and more get stuck in somthing you hate)

Plus pay and holiday in that field of work is high! so you can do all the traveling and surfing you like once ur got a job..!

Yeh go for uni, I went to Bolivia between my A levels and going to uni which was incredible and im going to new zealand to study, but seriously uni has been the best two years of my life so far. If you really want to travel you will be able to fit it around uni, join some societies there and some of those might give you the oppurtunity to travel etc. On the other hand if you do decide to go travelling you can come and stay with me while im in New Zealand!

Cheers Lib, I'll keep that in mind. Whereabouts in NZ you gonna be?

I've been going from wanting to start uni and wanting to travel, back and forth, prefering one more and then the other for months now. Each time I come up with the conclusion to go for uni and if I don't get an offer I have not much choice but to travel but if I do I'll just have to really decide and I guess the uni will do that for me, if I like it enough I'll be keen. If I'm not impressed with the uni I'll have to put more thought in but I'll let the decision be left up to whether I get an offer or not and then I will decide.

:? stress, it's all good :D

You say you've ben tryng for a while, that makes you in your twenties now right?

If you worried about your age at uni don't! everyone gets along reguardless! I'd deffently advise goingin intohals for the 1st year as you can get to know loads of people quickly (don't do the mature student halls thing tho) go in with everyone else, at least for one year its worth it.

As libs says every uni has loads of club etc. and almost every uni has a Surf Club 8) Where one(s) are you applying to?

Go for the interview, get offered the place (hopefully), then ring up the admissions person and ask if the place can be deferred for a year, then go travelling! Then come back and do uni.

Cant hurt to ask... :D

Yeah, i know, that's what i wanna do but with physio everything is different and not sure if you're allowed to defer. am gonna ask though defo.

PapaWoolacombe, it's not the age I'm bothered about at all, I'd rather be older and going to uni, it's just the fact that I've been trying for 3 years and put the effort in, the age doesn't bother me in the slightest. Although, for travelling I'd rather be younger so don't wanna loose out on my opportunity for going now. My last option left now is St Martin's College in Carlisle (which is the other reason why I'm not overly mad on the starting uni idea, if it was an awesome place I had the interview, I'd be more keen but still gonna check it out). Had an interview in York couple of months ago and loved the place but didn't get an offer so no luck there.

Also, it's not about the surf, it's hard to get myself across with the dilemma cos it would be an essay. It's more the fact that I'm going to see all my family and friends who I haven't seen properly in 7 years and the travelling is just a small fraction of why I would be going over to all those places. The surf as well will just be an added bonus, the main reason is to see brothers, sister, mother, dad, cousins, aunts, life-long buddies, family friends and the list goes on. That's why I wanna travel. :)

Im going to be based in Auckland (at Auckland uni)but going to travel alot in the holidays too. Also planning to go to Fiji at some point, want to do my PADI open water diving thing while im there.

Its not going to be an easy decision but good luck with your interview, and let us know what you decide.

Ps i only live 45 mins north of you, we should meet up when i come back in the summer, only going to be here for 6 weeks from the end of june but still. Im here at the mo actually but going back to uni tomorrow.

Any way good luck!
