Similar but different than Skateboarding, Snowboarding, and I imagine Surfing. Biggest difference is that Dirt hurts, alot.
Depends on what you plan on riding, but the more I rode, the more pads I added. Helmet, kneepads and gloves a must. Added elbow pads and even forearm guards when racing. Some folks like wrist guards depending on how you tend to fall. A$$ pads aren't a bad idea, though I have yet to get one.
But it's a blast. I ride mostly local mountain biking trails, so the terrain is a little rough, but if you can find some nice groomed slopes (like golf courses) or smooth dirt roads, you can have a blast. Also work fine in Skate parks on most platforms and of course on the street.
Depends on what you're looking to get out of it. Extend your riding season and try something new? It's good stuff, just don't be afraid to bruise.
